Pills in Development to allow only 2 hours of sleep

If they are safe amd will work....Sign me up!

Yeah right. Improvement to a drug used mainly to treat hypersomnia and narcolepsy? I don't think just tweaking glutamatergic, dopaminergic, and adrenergic activity is really going to work the way this article is making it sound. A lot of the major neurotransmitters in the brain can produce various results and the focus on what they seem to do isn't always a positive outcome. Increasing glutamate and decreasing GABA will only increase CNS activity and therefore royally screw up people with stress, anxiety, and other issues related to this major network. Of course, we all know a stimulant isn't going to prevent you from sleeping without crashing.

2 hours of sleep, who has time for that! No reallly while that is amazing, I like sleep. It is the one area that I really excel at.

On two seperate occasions I stayed up for nearly 72 hours (with stimulants). When I came down from the stimulants I felt like the life force was oozing out of me. I did not feel tired as much as I felt like I was dieing (not that I know what that feels like yet). Like I was ceasing to exist.
You would have an extremely hard time convincing me that any drug can make up for the 'life giving' energy (for lack of a better term) that sleep provides.
Maybe a drug could fool your brain into thinking it is sleeping. Or has slept. But what would the long term effects of that be.

It has been found that people that are deeply relaxed require less sleep. Sometimes as little as only a few hours a night. You want to sleep less? Learn to meditate, practise yoga, eat perfectly and remove all truly stressful occurances in your life. I am no scientist. But I bet you would eventually need no more then 2 or 3 hours per night - IF you could accomplish all those tasks over a period of years.
A very, VERY big if.

But, the pill idea IS interesting. however I bet you the first people that would use it would be the military for troops. Soldiers almost always seem to get the short end of the stick.

You took the words right out of my mouth. If anyone ever buys it first it'll be the Armed Forces. You're lucky to get 3-4 hours of sleep in the field anyway so they would probably give the pill out and not even give us the 2 hours.

Boy, are the health experts who are saying that American's aren't getting enough sleep going to freak out about this!!!

Sounds like bullshit to me. You don't need a pill anyway. Learn to nap something like 45 minutes, 4 times a day and you're there. That was established back in the '70's. This is just one more excuse for the pharmaceutical companies to advertise another "miracle in a vial".

Wait, this is already out on the street.

It goes by the name crystal meth.

Crack cocaine does the job very well also. Also great for suppressing your appetite.

Meth can fuck your skin up and requires higher and higher doses over time. But is cheap.
Crack has fewer longterm affects but can kill you with a heart attack or stroke while using. And is very expensive. Take your pick.

I'll try this pill instead.

Or I'll just meditate more often and try and learn yoga. :)

Yeah, I predict that when this pill goes on sale, a meth lab jackass will tweak (pardon the pun) it.

Some dipshit will break it down and find an ingredient that would make meth look like half a No-Doze.

That's why they now sell certain cough/cold meds from behind the counter.

They have the prime ingredient to making crystal meth.

Same'll happen here, mark my words.

Bad idea. Sleep is good. I love to sleep. It's how your body rebuilds itself. A pill can't do that. Sleep is an awesome escape from this shitty world we live in every day. That's all I need....about 6 more hours a day of this reality bullshit. No thanks.

Like building a strong body, there is no substitute for hard work. Why interfere with sleep?
Sleep is vital.
Sleep is natural.
This (pill idea) is just another excuse for people that have no sense of priorities.

"The more we understand about the body's 24-hour clock, the more we will be able to override it." So, 10,000+ years od evolution "improved" in just a few years..... No, thank you.

these scientist are crazy !!
I prefer working less than sleeping less, these pills will turn the society into something weird, some people will have to work 80h per week to have enough money... life & society basic requirment to get work will be more hard than ever :o

I was also thinking the same thing. It's also to have people work longer hours, thereby reducing the advantage of less sleep and still maintaing the high stress.

In my opinion, this is a bad idea. Our society is dependant upon enough pills as it is. I don't like taking pills when I am sick, let alone when i'm not. My wife has been ill for about three years now with a muscular disorder, and she has been living on a pill regiment for the whole time. Her disease is not life threatening, just debilitating (which is bad enough). But I have noticed her overall health decline since being on medication for an extended period of time. I sometimes wonder if the symptoms that are eleviated by her medications are worse than the ones she gets as a side affect to taking the meds. I think sleep is a very important part of our natural function. Many diseases are attributed to a lack of quality sleep. A pill that would allow people to function properly on a couple hours of sleep a night for an extended period of time is a bad idea in my book. Not only that, think about all of the wonderful dreams that a person could miss out on. Our dreams help keep us sane.

Good topic.

I sleep about 4 hours a day, and not by choice. I just can't sleep. Trust me,
"running on empty" half the time is no way of life, and it's bad for your health; I know this all too well. It's exhausting. Every 4-5 days I crash and sleep 8-10 hours in a complete dead-zone. We can trick our brains into feeling that we've slept a good night's sleep with some medication, but the physically-restorative purpose and need for sleep are vital.

Count me out on the pills. I'm taking enough meds already. lol
