Re: Online poker sites just got indicted... hope you guys dont have any $$$ in your a

I have a few bucks on one of those sites, Absolute Poker. After reading the article you posted, I am sure the banks and payment centers are frozen and under Govt. control. I thank God it wasnt a boatload, only a few hundred dollars. Thanks for the heads up. Although Im sure its too late to retrieve anything.

The US Government is full of idiots. Instead of making online gambling illegal, they should have just been taxing the shit out of it for much needed revenue.

Well, there goes my chance at winning my way to the poker tournament in Czech Republic.

This begs the question:

How come it was not illegal up till now? Is the government so fucking daft that they decide to wake up now if it was illegal all this while? I don't understand.

There's always an alternative - casinos.

That's exactly right! What many fail to realize is the fact that it's not the feds who want it illegal...it's the States & the casinos therein! It dips into their profits and business...and they see it as a perceived threat to their business (gaming, dining, rooms, souvenirs, etc.)...so they push the feds into squashing it because they are the ones who deal with interstate commerce, wire transactions, etc...in short, it's their jurisdiction & they are the puppets for the States and the casino industry/lobby! On the face of it, the feds wouldn't really care.

Charges include fraud, bribery, and money laundering. Thank god my benevolent government has taken their money and shut them down so they can give trillions in tarp money and bailouts to AIG, Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, and Citibank. Because none of those companies engage in fraud, bribery, or money laundering.

Fuck this place.

The same could be asked about why the government is so fucking daft on marijuana and prostitution. Marijuana is harmless and it's a known effective painkiller, but instead of taxing the shit out of it, they keep it illegal. The same about prostitution. It hurts no one (except celebrities when they get caught), and instead of making it legal in a few places in Nevada, they keep it illegal. That kind of shit is why America will never be as cool as Europe IMO.

If im correct its been illegal since the Bush administration. They are just now enforcing things.

So basically these guys knew what they were doing and just took the risk by using crazy loopholes and methods to cover it up.

That's pretty much correct, although a few European based sites (including Party Poker which was big at the time) froze all American accounts back in 2006 when this prohibition first passed.

Yep.

And worse yet, they are thereby allied with the ever invasive Morality Police - "The Christian Coalition", "The Moral Majority", "Focus On Family" et al   .... who would probably shut down school dances if they could.

Meanwhile millions of elderly, shut ins and people who don't have reasonable access to live action casinos just got fucked out of a perfectly legitimate form of recreation.

I'm sure that's where we're headed. Once the government gets a piece of the action, all the sites will be back up and running.

Re: Online poker sites just got indicted... hope you guys dont have any $$$ in your a

US states are starting to pass online gaming for their own benefit. Cracking down on private organizations was the step to clear access for government sponsored gambling.

Re: Online poker sites just got indicted... hope you guys dont have any $$$ in your a

I just heard on CNBC the top 3 sites, Full Tilt, PokerStars, and Absolute, had an estimate combined value of $30 billion on thursday night, and are now worth less than half of that. ESPN (disney) earned over $20 million annually from Full Tilt alone. Thousands of US citizens make a living playing online poker and putting the money they earn back in the economy. Now those who really want to put their skills to work may move to other countries where the game is legal. Full Tilt, PokerStars, etc will put their ad money out of the US and put it where they can still sell their services.

So in a time where the US is running a $14 TRILLION deficit, the feds are voluntarily kicking out citizens, ESPN and many other TV shows (I see full tilt ads everywhere) 100s of millions in ad revenue, and sending that incredibly lucrative potential tax base to somewhere else. But they'll give almost a trillion dollars to financial companies that are both too stupid and too criminal to run at a fucking profit.

Words cannot describe just how much I hate my government.
