Technology will always be able to outrun politicians so their pathetic attempt to once again infringe on our freedoms will be short-lived. Fuck 'em.
 
I've already signed 2 petitions online against this nonsense. Aside from my love of porn, if this passes it will be a huge blow to the worlds economy. I really don't see who these bills would benefit. Certainly no one will get rich if they pass. Actually quite a few people might end up filing bankruptcy.

A similar bill was introduced back when I was a Freshman in College. The Internet Censorship Bill of 1995 (aka Communications Decency Act) was proposed by Sen. Jim Exon (D-Neb) and Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind). If this Bill would have ******, we wouldn't be here on Freeones, or have Google, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, etc. The only reason I remember this is because I was taking Sociology and one of our assignments was to write letters to Congress about current issues we felt strongly about. Just think, all public discourse on the Internet would have been made suitable for ********. Our daily on-line news would be read on a 6th grade level! Maybe our government should stop worrying about being criticized on the internet, or people throwing out F-Bombs on-line and focus on balancing their budget, tackling our National Debt, ending wars, Iran, oil crises, joblessness, etc. etc. etc.

The IP Act (S.968 - PROTECT IP Act of 2011) establishes a system for taking down websites that the Justice Department determines to be "dedicated to infringing activities." The DoJ or the copyright owner would be able to commence a legal action against the alleged infringer and the DoJ would be allowed to demand that search engines, social networking sites and domain name services block access to the targeted site. In some cases, action could be taken to block sites without first allowing the alleged infringer to defend themselves in court. The PROTECT IP Act would allow copyright owners – movie studios and other content providers – simply to accuse a website of infringement, which could lead to that site being shut down by court order and entire links to the site being wiped clean from the Internet. The bill is so poorly written that it would allow any copyright owner to shut down a legitimate retail website, such as Amazon or Best Buy, by alleging that one product being sold on the site could “enable or facilitate” an infringement. It could even allow any content owner to block access to the Patent Office website if it receives and posts a patent application for a product that is believed to use content without permission. The PROTECT IP Act will hurt American innovation. This bill will give one side the power to put the other side out of business and this is dangerous beyond words.


Website Blocking
The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

I've already sent a letter to the Speaker of our Parliament objecting to SOPA & PIPA, insisting that web is a communication media and it's Freedom can not be curbed.
