Obama Administration Set to Ban Asthma Inhalers Over Environmental Concerns

Asthma patients who rely on over-the-counter inhalers will need to switch to prescription-only alternatives as part of the federal government's latest attempt to protect the Earth's atmosphere.

The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday patients who use the epinephrine inhalers to treat mild asthma will need to switch by Dec. 31 to other types that do not contain chlorofluorocarbons, an aerosol substance once found in a variety of spray products.

The action is part of an agreement signed by the U.S. and other nations to stop using substances that deplete the ozone layer, a region in the atmosphere that helps block harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun.

But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, range from $30 to $60.

Works for panties
I've heard the one's without the CFCs don't work as well, and as someone with asthma, the last thing you want when you need your inhaler so you can breath again is for it not to work as well. That'll land you in the emergency room. If you can manage to breath enough for long enough to get there.

Another thing is, alotta those effected are kids. I've had it since I was little, and had to use inhalers and nebulizers, but as I got more used to having it, I learned that while my breathing was limited during an attack, if I stayed calm, I could breathe well enough to be alright even without medicine. But until you realize that, and you can't really be told it, you sorta freak out that you can't breathe, which only makes things worse. How do they think those kids are gonna react once they switch, and now all of a sudden their inhalers don't work as well? They may even try additional doses when they don't get the desired and conventional relief, and that's not good either.

Yep, for most people, the modern version of "freedom" is between two things so similar they make no real difference... :goodpost:

The thread title is very misleading as usual. :nono:

Still, the "environmental concern" justification is obviously bullshit. It's all about pharmaceutical companies making a profit.

Not surprisingly, "The Weekly Standard" (i.e. conservative mouthpiece) failed to report the following:

"The FDA finalized plans to phase out the products in 2008, and the only one now sold in the U.S. is Armstrong Pharmaceutical's Primatene mist. Other inhaler makers have switched to an environmentally friendly propellant called hydrofluoroalkane." http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20110642-10391704.htm

Hmm, let's see, who was our president in 2008? :uohs: :drool2: :dunno:

hint: It wasn't Obama.

Yes it is. Very.

Come on, it's from The Weekly Standard! God knows they're objective!

I loved how "Mr. Hemmingway" ("cute" pen name btw. Ha ha ha!) finished his article:

Well, tough cookies asthma sufferers! You should have written bigger checks to the Democratic party while you had the chance.

Ummmmmmmm yeah, that pretty much says it all regarding the objectivity of the article!

I wonder why the worm chose to omit that part when it quoted a portion of the article? :dunno:

Kudos to you for being able to do your own research, demonstrating the ability to use critical thought, and for actually considering the source! You are a rare breed my friend! :glugglug:

Dammit. If I can't get my hairdo right, you can't breathe, bitches!!:hairpull:

If you have asthma, Primatene Mist is not a solution at all. Like having serious pain and using Aspirin. This is same as when the elimated CFC's in Aerosol cans! big deal!

He's going to give them breathalyzers instead!

Anyway, I think the reason behind this is odd. Of all "spray products" you take away the medicine first? :dunno:

And, yes, the thread title is misleading, but so is the original title for the article. It should definitely clarify that it's over the counter or non-prescription inhalers.

Oh god save the queen!!! First, there was that government group that recommended women don't get/need mammograms before age 50. :bang: Then the government earmarked $250K to a state to study the effect of cow shit and farts (methane) on the atmosphere. Then there was the half-million spent to study shrimp running on treadmills (yes, really). Now, the inhaler gas is hurting the planet. Really!?

OK, here's a modest proposal that the progressive can embrace: How about we just kill off everyone with asthma. Problem solved. That way we keep the air clean and reduce the population, which will mean there are fewer mouths to feed and fewer people to burden the health care system. A win-win-win-win situation. Yayyyy!

Ooops. Guess you didn't read post #6.

Impressive rejoinders by Trident and The Worm too. Move over Bill Buckley, this crew is the new voice of conservatism

No, that's not the way it is. Many other spray products that contained CFC's have been altered, phased out or banned going back as far as two or three decades.

For instance, in looking around the net it appears freon was banned from use in aerosol cans way back in 1978.

I think that the 'ban' on those Aerosoles is more on the actual gas, not on the pumpers

I didn't think you could get an asthma inhaler without a prescription..

I guess you need to find the right drug dealer :1orglaugh

I remember once going to an older female doctor, who seemed to not care about anything, the waiting room was so full of fishy-looking guys, and they went in, asked for, say 6 weeks of sick leave, and got their yellow ticket for their jobs or school or whatever. same with medicine receipts.

I got me two weeks, and never went back there, way too creepy
