Obama to use executive orders for immediate impact

WASHINGTON – President-elect Obama plans to use his executive powers to make an immediate impact when he takes office, perhaps reversing Bush administration policies on stem cell research and domestic drilling for oil and natural gas.
John Podesta, Obama's transition chief, said Sunday Obama is reviewing President Bush's executive orders on those issues and others as he works to undo policies enacted during eight years of Republican rule. He said the president can use such orders to move quickly on his own.
"There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we'll see the president do that," Podesta said. "I think that he feels like he has a real mandate for change. We need to get off the course that the Bush administration has set."

Don't stop there ! Make fugitives out of several million of us while you're at it. What else does mr ambitious have in mind ? I would suggest that the president to be (I'm sick of saying elect), approach the Presidency with a calm, moderate, reasoned and unabusive demeanor. If not, it'll be a rough ride for everybody.

Well enjoy those cheap gas prices while they last because when they go up again and break that $5.00 barrier, guess what? Mr. O will not drill, because remember on the third debate "I will look into drilling" code word for it ain't gonna happen...it's coming. Perharps Bush jr?

It sounds as if he want to suspend all drilling in on and around American territories and thus, placing our energy requirements at the mercy of his middle eastern brethren. This is entirely the opposite direction that this govt. needs to go, particularly at this point in time, given the macro economic challenges ahead.

Why in the hell is this man so bold at this time ? Has all of this recent, undeserved fanfare gone to his head ? Isn't this E.O. talk kind of a no - no on this 10, Nov. 2008 ? Hold your f'en horseys, man ! You're insulting the very Office of the Presidency. besides, you have "no controlling legal authority"
9 weeks of relative freedom remaining, apparently.

If that is the case and he follows through with that plan, then impeachment proceedings can start.

I read further down in the article.
Presidents long have used executive orders to impose policy and set priorities. One of Bush's first acts was to reinstate full abortion restrictions on U.S. overseas aid. The restrictions were first ordered by President Reagan and the first President Bush followed suit. President Clinton lifted them soon after he occupied the Oval Office and it wouldn't be surprising if Obama did the same.

Executive orders "have the power of law and they can cover just about anything," Tobias said in a telephone interview.

Bush used his executive power to limit federal spending on embryonic stem cell research, a position championed by opponents of abortion rights who argue that destroying embryos is akin to ******* a fetus. Obama has supported the research in an effort to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's. Many moderate Republicans also support the research, giving it the stamp of bipartisanship.

Two sides to every story.

Yet people think this is a new thing, it seems Obama is going to get more scrutiny than past Presidents. I personally have no problems with him taking the initiative, he did talk about change after all, not more of the same.

It's hilarious (and yet sad somehow - perhaps the word is "tragicomic"?) to see people get their panties in a wad over executive orders NOW. If they're used to break laws (FISA) or to spy on peace groups or to sanction *******, no big whoop, but if they're used for anything at all (mostly relatively bland stuff) by Obama, then whoa....watch out for that uppity black man!! Please....

:rolleyes::rolleyes::confused::1orglaugh:rolleyes:

FK, Maildude, Sherlock: please, let's not interject rational thought and spoil this moment for the conspiracy twins.

his middle eastern brethren.

:rofl2:

Yes FK, I believe tragicomic would be the appropriate word. And it hasn't even been a week yet. Stay tuned for much, much more...

I gotta step in here. Having worked in research for many years (no longer- I gotta eat), I will say that the stem cells used haven't come from embryos in many years. Stem cells have been gathered using sinus swabs for quite some time now. No babies are being ******, nor are they being cloned for parts (at least in any accredited US institution). Hell, MY nose was swabbed and the cells cured paralysis in rats. I hope that human studies will be implemented within the next year.

Make that triplets.
Why I don't trust Obama reason #5:
Cause I don't have time to write them all.
The hateful, insightful, divisive words of his pastor whom he referred to as his mentor.

Wow, Obama hasn't even sworn in and you guys are already up in arms about what's he's planning to do? Give give our President elect the benefit of the doubt and see if his policies work or not. After 8 years of Bush you still aren't convinced a change is needed in this country? Sheesh.

Obama chose the most abusive, abrasive Congressman from North Chicago as his Chief-of-Staff, Rambo Emmanel, (Realm) and former Clinton chief-of staff as Transition Manager.

On last Friday during the press conference, everyone on stage is white and 50% are Jewish !

So all of you really stupid butthead thinking about changes, it is same old, same old. The Jews controlled America and Obama is just the figure head !

Obama is just another president stuck in the same old routines. I dont think USA can change that much. Even if Obama is going against the stream, he wont be able to change much.

At least, that's what im expecting. You can't turn a country upside down. Pressure groups, lobbyists, Big Buisness, traditions... It weights too much for real change.

Besides a thing here and there, maybe turning around few conservative things into leftish things, Obama is stuck as any President is stuck.

My :2 cents:

I don't see a problem with Obama talking about what executive orders he is going to issue. The majority of the American people voted in such a way to demonstrate that they support Obama and his views. So he plans on following up on his views with his executive orders.

If this is what the majority of the American people want, then why should he not do his best to follow up on what they want? The voters demonstrated they don't want Bush's policies, so what better thing to do then end these policies? Good example of an elected official following up on campaign promises and acting according to the will of his constituents.

Sure maybe Obama could have waited until he actually is the President, but I see these statements as a calming indication to those who voted for Obama that change is coming.

Not bad Dawn, I agree with that to an extent.
Only thing is there are no Pressure groups or lobbyists for the average single/no chioldren or married/no ******** workers of The United States, And if they are taxed anymore they will wind up on welfare also.
Then on to the next group until they are they with em.
Speculation, but judging by past actions of these people now in power and their tax/spend habits .its probable.
Also realize that with Pelosi , Ried and Obama having complete rule of the kingdom, yes, much change is very possible.
Blank Check

Interesting conversation and debate going on in this thread but do we need racism and bigotry to make our points? I don't think the comment about the JEWS controlling America is accurate. I do like hearing other people's points of view pro and con Obama, who knows ? maybe I'll learn something here but I would request that we make an effort to keep the conversation polite and leave out the bigotry.
