He's a very good actor, but is unable to maintain consistency of performance. I think he also has one of those styles/personas that fall into the category 'acquired taste' ....

Depends - I thought he was great in Wild At Heart & Kick-Ass - ok in Vampire's Kiss, Con-Air, Snake Eyes & 8MM.
But as for Gone In Sixty Seconds, Ghost Rider and (esp) Knowing...oh dear...:o
Can't comment on Wicker Man or Bad Lieutenant (since I generally try to stay away from anything that looks like a remake)...

I liked him in Adaptation and Trapped in Paradise but now that they're putting Drive Angry on Criterion I've got to check it out before it leaves theaters.
he is "gets the job done actor", not a bad one, but also not really good. And there is something about him I cant stand. I dont know why, but whenever I see a moviecover with his face on it, with this one look he has on all covers, which probably is meant to be a really deep and meaningful look, I just think "hell no, fuck this shit"
His only good acting was in Leaving Las Vegas.
He's an actor that's hard to get a good gauge of how good he is. He's often too feast or famine in his performances. Some of them are pretty good and some of them stink. You never know which Cage is going to show up for that movie. He's also very dependent on a good script and having it be tailored to his acting style to make it work. He's not an actor that has continually showed the ability to take an work with otherwise mediocre potential and raise it up by his performances like some of the best actors might. He doesn't seem to have a wide range of acting ability. He hasn't shown to be a good supporting actor either.
If a work is a type he specializes in he can often pull it off good, but at other times it can almost be laughable. Maybe he’s just doesn’t have the ability or has never been in a good situation to show he can do it.

I should add, as a person, Cage does seem likable to me. But, that's just me.

I think Cage and Reeves are average. Every character that Cage has played has been another version of Nicholas Cage. Take the Rock and Con Air, different kind of characters but similar acting in both performances.
The best actors get into each role and are totally different from their characters, when interviewed as themselves on TV.
