NHL '09/'10 Season Thread

Not a whole lot of discussion going on since I've last been on.

Is noone talking about the Heatley situation? The guy used to be my favourite player until he turned into a whiney bitch. He's due $4 million on July 1st so if we end up waiting until then it means our owner would have spent $14 mil on a 1 guy for 1 year.

Anyway, one of my favourite days is coming up on Wednesday! July 1st Free Agent Signings! Always a good time. Plus it's Canada Day...

as for as the heatley situation, I bet hes staying in ottawa, july 1st he gets a bonus, They wanted 2 top players and a 1st round draft pick for him don't get me wrong he's good but not that good.

oh, and if a Lecavalier trade is in the works, tomorrow is the last day for it to happen.

<---still confident he's staying

I'm pleased that they made all those offers , specially to Smaby and Krajicek. As for Lecavalier , I read that there where never any real offers on the table for him at least from montreal , only names thrown out but nothing serious ( so sorry rds , Len Barrie NEVER had to stop a trade with montreal from happening , it was all misinformation) .

Francois Beauchemin is a free agent?! oh my God, Tampa, if you could land us that bad ass defenseman i will bow at your feet forever.

i've wanted him as a Bolt for years

Edit:

The Canadiens acquired centre Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defencemen Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko.

So Sather finally managed to find someone to unload that ridiculously overpaid contract of Scott Gomez. He got a good player in Higgins and a future great defenceman in Mcdonaugh while lowering his payroll to get a better player than Gomez. All I can say is kudos mister Sather

MONTREAL (CP) -- Mike Komisarek will test the open market. But that doesn't mean he's done with the Montreal Canadiens.

Komisarek has decided to wait until after noon ET Wednesday before signing a contract, giving him the chance to become an unrestricted free agent before making a decision.

"After much discussion and thought, Mike Komisarek has decided to enter the free-agent market tomorrow at noon," agent Matt Keator said in a statement on Tuesday. "Should they desire, we intend to keep Montreal involved in the process as they have treated Mike so well during his time in the organization.

"He remains interested in re-signing with them."

Komisarek, 27, has spent his entire career with the Habs after being drafted seventh overall in 2001.

He is one of the highest-profile defensemen available in free agency.

Team USA has named 34 players to their Olympic camp:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=432241

I'm Canadian first and American second as a dual citizen; however, I am very interested in how the American team performs at the upcoming winter Olympics. If it were to end as it did in Salt Lake City with the Canadian team beating the American team for the gold medal, that would be an ideal outcome for me.

The American team is vastly improved from about ten or fifteen years ago when they were at best the fifth best team in the world. I'd have to say with all of their new and emerging young, talented players they have established themselves as a legitimate medal contender; however, I do still look at Canada as being the favourite (as always) and Russia as a disturbingly and frighteningly close second, their only weakness being overall depth, especially depth of goaltending (if Khabibulin and/or Bryzgalov are unable to compete for Russia they could have a lot of trouble between the pipes).

Team USA is going to be really good. They certainly have more than competent goaltenders with reigning Vezina-winner Tim Thomas and Ryan Miller as well. Their young forwards are very good, but their weakness could be depth of defencemen. I have to say that I'm not very happy with the exclusion of Bill Guerin and Doug Weight from the Olympic camp. While I do understand that this doesn't mean that they're not going to be on the team in the end, I don't like the idea of stacking a team with youth like Brian Burke and the Team USA executives seem to want to do. Having a good balance of veterans and young talent is the way to go. Canada will certainly have that. And Guerin is definitely still as talented or more so than many of the American forwards invited to camp. Hopefully he makes the team in the end.

Marian Hossa has turned down a 10-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings, according to the Canadian media outlet Sportsnet.ca.

That means Hossa will be an unrestricted free agent beginning at noon Wednesday -- and likely the most coveted player on the market.

The deal-breaker, according to Sportsnet, was proposal's average salary -- reportedly between $3.75 million and $4 million per season.

Hossa's one-year deal this season paid him $7.45 million. For it, he delivered 40 goals and 31 assists in 76 games.

He left the Pittsburgh Penguins last year after the Stanley Cup finals to join the Red Wings in hope of winning an NHL title -- only to see the Wings lose to the Penguins in seven games in the finals.
