New Threads/Old Threads.....Let's talk About This For A Minute

Anyone who knows me knows I have an anal retentive side. I've mentioned my pet peeve about threads in the Talk section that should be somewhere else, blah, blah, blah.

Well, being the contrary fucker that I am, I have to say that not only do I not find anything wrong with a thread getting started about an old, already covered subject; I'm kinda glad when it does. The last thing I would want to see is a Page 1 filled with threads that go on and on over dozens of pages and a number of years. In fact, as a semi-legitimate FOG around here, I'm saying that it would hurt the discussions around here.

First of all, we need a turnover. We lose people, so we need to gain newer people. If you were/are one of these noobs, do you want to read through 25 pages just to see where the conversation is at? I don't.

Secondly, every discussion topic that "has legs" inevitably goes off topic in one way or another. I've done it, and so have you. Again, why make the next guy/gal have to sift through all the side-tracks just to get to the end?

Third, speaking for myself, alluding to my other two points, I tend to give up on a thread once it has reached Page 5 or so. This is and will always be, recreation. At some point a thread gets too heavy to be fun anymore. That's a poor way of putting it, but I'm kinda just sitting here making this shit up as I go.

Anyway, Jack has been taking a lot of shit from us, including me. I find him to be a 50/50 proposition. Half of his threads are good, half his threads are drivel. I personally will agree with him when I agree, I will carpet tack him to a wall and shoot paintballs at him when I don't. But I don't see a problem with him (or anyone else) starting a thread that has been already been covered. Both Will and I remarked recently that the board has gotten slower. Jack is, in fact, helping with that.

And let us all recognize one irrefutable and ongoing fact: The search function on this board sucks sweaty moose testicles and it always has. I have launched clearly defined, advanced searches that have gone nowhere, only to find what I was precisely looking for, after the fact. My fellow FOG's know this too, and there have been threads and comments made to this effect since the first day I was a member.

Anyway, that's how I feel.

I agree. As long as someone is not spamming, and a 'reasonable' time has passed since the 'old' thread was active I have no problem with it.

Anyone who bitches about reposts is an idiot. Forums go through reposts all the time, there are only so many subjects that can be talked about. As far as jack goes, its not always what he is reposting or newly posting, it is why he is reposting it. That ratio of 50/50 would be way different if we weren't so hard on him.

Good idea.

I am gonna start a thread about this.

Good points for the most part but I personally consider it a waste of time to remake arguments that I have already made on a number of occasions (like the "death penalty" thread). You might be anal-retentive....I don't like wasting time. :1orglaugh Also, Freeones only has a certain amount of bandwidth available so I tend to use the search function in deference to the site rather than my own personal aversion to repeat threads.

That said....I agree that Kiefer has injected a bit of energy here whether you agree with him or not. I don't have as big a problem with him as some seem to.

First of all; what the fuck is a "FOG"!?

I also tend to lose steam on a thread after about page 5 or so, especially a pic of .gif thread. Actually; I tend to avoid .gif threads period, because they're a pain in the fucking ass.

Agreeing with someone all the time is boring; and so is avoiding threads filled with people who have opinions you don't share.

Well, I for one now love Kiefer after he showed us his model trains! :yesyes:

The "OG" stands for "old guy". You can decide what the "F" stands for. I dunno, it used to be a common term, but it's been a while since I've seen it used, now that you bring it up. A forum veteran, someone who has been around for....long enough. With your join date, you are the FOG-iest of the FOGs (hmmmm....that can be read the wrong way).

The search function on this board sucks sweaty moose testicles and it always has. .

The main reason why I am patient with noobs. I ordinarily just post link(s) to similar threads when they start a repeat topic.

There's another forum that I frequent that automatically closes threads after 25 replies. That's a tad excessive, I think, but having threads that span hundreds of pages is a bit overkill on the other end.

Fucker power hungry mods on my City forum closed a good ass thread I had going because some yahoo came in and decided to make a FEW bullshit posts. Pissed me off so bad that I almost don't want to go back. Almost. Those mods don't ban but they sure as shit like to close threads with NO due warning.

That guy who starts all the troll threads that have been covered 45,000 times strictly to cause shit. He also has Keifer Sutherland as his avatar. But now people like him because he made some (pretty cool) model train dioramas.

I think he just misspelled "fags." :1orglaugh

If I feel like responding to a retarded thread, like this one, I'll damned well do it. And none of you mufuckas are gonna stop me.

I actually agree, Mayhem. I don't bother with them long ass threads. I got better shit to do then have to sift thru what someone said 18 months ago.

If you don't wanna repeat your answer repeatedly on a similar thread, then don't fucking bother. No one's requiring you to state your opinion every time the topic comes up. And saying your opinion would require as much effort as going out of your way to say "this topic's been covered a thousand times, jackwagon."
