Anyone who knows me knows I have an anal retentive side. I've mentioned my pet peeve about threads in the Talk section that should be somewhere else, blah, blah, blah.
Well, being the contrary fucker that I am, I have to say that not only do I not find anything wrong with a thread getting started about an old, already covered subject; I'm kinda glad when it does. The last thing I would want to see is a Page 1 filled with threads that go on and on over dozens of pages and a number of years. In fact, as a semi-legitimate FOG around here, I'm saying that it would hurt the discussions around here.
First of all, we need a turnover. We lose people, so we need to gain newer people. If you were/are one of these noobs, do you want to read through 25 pages just to see where the conversation is at? I don't.
Secondly, every discussion topic that "has legs" inevitably goes off topic in one way or another. I've done it, and so have you. Again, why make the next guy/gal have to sift through all the side-tracks just to get to the end?
Third, speaking for myself, alluding to my other two points, I tend to give up on a thread once it has reached Page 5 or so. This is and will always be, recreation. At some point a thread gets too heavy to be fun anymore. That's a poor way of putting it, but I'm kinda just sitting here making this shit up as I go.
Anyway, Jack has been taking a lot of shit from us, including me. I find him to be a 50/50 proposition. Half of his threads are good, half his threads are drivel. I personally will agree with him when I agree, I will carpet tack him to a wall and shoot paintballs at him when I don't. But I don't see a problem with him (or anyone else) starting a thread that has been already been covered. Both Will and I remarked recently that the board has gotten slower. Jack is, in fact, helping with that.
And let us all recognize one irrefutable and ongoing fact: The search function on this board sucks sweaty moose testicles and it always has. I have launched clearly defined, advanced searches that have gone nowhere, only to find what I was precisely looking for, after the fact. My fellow FOG's know this too, and there have been threads and comments made to this effect since the first day I was a member.
Anyway, that's how I feel.
