MLB 2009 thread

shayd the whitesox have other free agents to be and i think there will be deals in free agency again this year if your patient so a backloaded contract isn't always bad you just have to plan for it

I realize that money will be a bit more free, but you have to look at what this trade does to the rotation in the future. Sure, you add a top of the rotation guy in Peavy, but you also lose a lot of your future pitching core. You've got Contreras, and probably Colon gone, (not that they have been all that good). The FA market for starting pitching isn't looking all that great, so there probably aren't too many guys to add there either. Assuming they don't shock the league this offseason and trade for another great pitcher, they're probably going to have a rotation for the foreseeable future that looks like:

Peavy
Buehrle
Floyd
Danks
Some other guy

Now the top four look great, and that's assuming they can keep up their current pace, (which I personally think they will). If Danks and Floyd perform to their ability, now you've got to start worrying about arbitration, and those guys won't be cheap. Add to that the fact that they just traded away their top four pitching prospect, and in the two years before two more pitching prospects were dealt, and there's a potential problem there. Now if Williams is willing to swing one of those guys down the road to another team, then that may work out, but the much easier, cheaper, and seemingly more efficient manner would have been to keep the four guys in the deal.

it's not like the whitesox haven't done this before. i would think jose contreas could hold down the five spot for a year or 2. i also think this trade was made because they really wanted Peavy damn the cost

I'd be really surprised if they resigned Contreras. And what's odd is that the Sox have usually been pretty deep pitching wise, and it looks like they just traded away most of what they had, which is where the problem starts.

The one and only.
Hey, I'll be in Cincy tonight for the Cubbies and Reds game. We're going to turn Great American Ballpark into "Wrigley East". Look for me in the crowd. I'll be the guy in a Cubs shirt drinking a beer - that narrows it down right? Oh well, Go Cubs Go!

My Dodgers have been very average lately, but we'll get it together. It would've been nice to get another starting pitcher, but I think we have enough.

If Kershaw can curb the walks down the stretch, they'll be more than set.

yeah the whitesox did thin themselves out a little bit pitching wise. i was just looking at my latest baseball america issue and i see some potential pitchers but nobody like the group they traded.

The Dodgers just need to survie Aug and Sep. hard to belive that Jason Schmidt might be a difference maker 3 years after the first signed him

Exactly. That's the only reason why it's tough for me to say the White Sox won in that deal. They gave away four very talented, very young arms for one expensive one.

Jason Giambi just released by the A's.
Just a matter of time now for The Big Giambino!:wave2:

the Giants lost a game they shouldn't have or are they looking ahead to the Dodgers series starting Monday?

It's nice to see that the Yankees are on a roll-- 6 wins a row, top of the AL East, best record in the major leagues. They've had 2 great performances from 1-2 starters. The Red Sox weren't bad (Beckett and Bucholz were really good) the Yankees just played better. I hope the Yankees can continue with the great performances all the way to the WS!

Is Giambi done? Probably. Well the Giants had a full moon fuck up on freaky friday. Well we got Zeets tomorrow.

Yes, I think he's done. It was great to have him in NY. I was happy to see him turn things around after that episode on PED and I understand he was a really good teammate. But all things must come to an end. It's a pity that he never was on a champion team and never made a hit where it really counts-- in the postseason.

More like they gave away two talented young arms and two unproven ones.

The Peavy deal is for years to come more so than for this year. The only way that they come up losers in this deal as of right now for this season,is if Peavy doesn't pitch.According to Sox pitching coach Don Cooper,he's looking to start a rehab assignment down in AAA as soon as this upcoming week.

The White Sox have the real potential to make some noise in August and September. And there's the rumor that the Sox picked up Alex Rios off of waivers from Toronto. This one might be another setup move for next season,if the rumor is true.

Well technically they're all unproven, but three of the four have numbers that are drool worthy, which is what makes this sweet for the Padres. Poreda has hitters missing nearly 16% of the pitches they swing at, which is excellent anytime, let alone at 23, plus he gets a ton of groundballs, another huge plus. Richard to me looks at lot like Buerhle. He works really quickly, throws strikes, and looks to be about a #3 ceiling type of player. Russell is a power arm and has been working out of the pen the past couple of years, and power arms from the pen are always in demand. Carter, who everyone has sort of glanced over at this point is 22, and has 232 strikeouts in 186 innings, with only 57 walks. Those numbers are insane, even for A ball. The crux of this deal is the fact that the Padres got a number of moderate to high upside guys who are cost controlled for at the least 3 years, for the price of a guy who now has a concerning injury history, and who, after this season is nowhere near a bargain. Peavy could come and dominate and this deal would still probably favor the Padres simply by virtue of a supply of talent, and making sense financially.

Rios is another guy that I stay away from if I'm the Sox. He's expensive, injury prone, and his numbers have fallen steadily for the past 3 years, significantly even. There's something to be said for the fact that he's slumping more and more as he's entered the prime of his career.

i think Rios got complacent when he scored the big contract and now that there are expectations on him he can not deliver

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
As a Red Sox fan, I am ready to wave the flag. I know it is only August 10th, but I just don't see this team turning it around. They have a brutal stretch coming up and .500 ball is not going to cut it. This weekend hurt. Still have a few games left with the Yankees but the Yankees are on a roll. I know the Angels didn't do well this weekend, but they are gonna be tough in october. Heck, the Sox may not make the playoffs. Rangers are playing well and Tampa is right on their heels.

Oh well.

You make good points,so I guess this is one of those deals that time will tell.Clayton Richard's last two starts for the Sox were auditions, imo, and that was pretty much proven with his trade.Kenny doesn't waste any time trading young arms and using them as commodities. The same thing was done with Brandon McCarty and Gio Gonzalez, two young arms that were highly touted by the organization.

I will say that giving up those guys,I just wonder if Kenny Williams went to the Blue Jays with the same offer for Halliday.

That may be the case, but this is actually a decent deal for the Sox. I was assuming before that the Sox would negotiate a trade, but getting Rios for salary relief isn't too bad (aside from the contract). There are a lot of red flags right now from Rios offensively, most prevalent the fact that he can't go the other way, but coming to the Cell may have a net positive effect on Rios output. If the Sox are smart Rios will become the everyday CF for the foreseeable future.

Honestly, that's the same thought I had when I heard about the deal, because while Ricciardi has been pushing a hard bargain, that's a great package of guys.

They have been talking about this quite a bit so far on local sports talk radio_Ozzie had a impromptu powwow with some of the guys(I guess just the outfielders) and said that he won't tolerate guys pouting over playing time.
Some of the radio guys are thinking that Podsednik could end up being the odd man out for next year and Dye's option not being picked up.I think that would be a huge mistake.

I would like to see the outfield of Pods in left,Rios in center and Quentin in right, with JD as the DH.It's time to wave goodbye to Jim Thome and his 130+ strikeouts after the year's end.

The only problems is that getting rid of Thome makes this team WAY too right handed heavy with only 3 lefty bats in the lineup, and none of those left handed bats would be in the heart of the order.

I see Kenny getting another left handed bat,if Thome,Dye,or Konerko don't return next year.
