MLB 2009 thread

i think the Giants aren't going to add salary and are looking to keep cost down and are going to compete with what they have.

red001

They probably won't add any now, but they're sinking pretty fast now.

The Rays won last year didn't they ? And they are close again this year so why not ?

either
1) the Rays will have to either play extremely well the rest of the season to overcome the Sox and Yanks who are both playing very well
AND/OR
2) both the Yanks and the sox will have to start playing poorly for the rest of the season

Rays will need to land a good trade deal or bring up a really good prospect for 1 to happen. The other two will need injuries for 2 to happen.

Rays have a shot at wildcard, not much more than that.

Uh, who exactly do they have who's even remotely close to the majors?

Out of the four of Sandoval, Schierholtz, Romo, and Ishikawa, only two are even legitimate above average starters. The Giants farm system has been weak since about 2003 when they decided to offload Liriano, Nathan + another for Pierzinsky. A good farm team has legitimate depth, and the Giants just don't have that, and haven't for a long time.

And money wouldn't have been an issue. The A's pitched in about $2 million of Hollidays approximately $5 million left this year. The $3 millions he's owed would have been worked out in the trade, as in the Giants would have sent someone back to offset the cost. Sabean was pretty suspiciously quiet about Holliday, most likely because he didn't want to give up any talent from an already thin farm system.

I dont know about you, but I would say thats pretty good. YOu have to look at Lincecum, Cain, Sandoval, Ishikawa all coming up to the big leagues is going to leave your farm system a little weak since you arent having those type of players fill in their spots until you have a few more drafts.

Look at the Dodgers. In recent years we have graduated Kemp, Loney, Kershaw, Billingsley, Broxton all to the majors. Our farm is a lot weaker this year than it has been in years past.

Off the Giants infield roster, 3 guys are 30+ and all the rest are 27 and under. I would say thats moving a lot of pieces from the farm team to the big leagues.

As for the money, you never know. It was a rumor I heard on ESPN.

Welp the Giants got Garko from the Indians for a promising prospect. While that was big news at the beginning of the game. By the end the talk ended up being about Lincecum.

Having four guys make the ML roster is a good farm team? I would define a good farm system as one that develops a significant amount of good ML players. The players ages really have no bearing on the status of the farm system, as having a great player could block the promotion of prospects. What is most telling is how the promoted players perform. Simply put, the Giants haven't had that.

I'll grant you that Lincecum and Cain are studs, and that Sandoval has played very well in his short career. But that's about it out of the players the Giants have turned out. Since 2003, 7 players (the actual number is closer to 4, but I'm including Romo and Sandoval despite both having short careers to this point) have come out of the Giants system that are above the league average in terms of offensive and defensive value. The average WAR for Giants prospects since that time is 0.2. That in today's market is pitiful. At this point, it's about quality and quantity of the prospects that determine the relative health of the farm system, and the Giants haven't had a good farm system in 6 or so years. Saying they've had a lot of people promoted to the big leagues really doesn't bear any correlation to the health of the farm system, rather it reflects the needs of the franchise. Hell, the Royals have had a ton of promotion from within, and its pretty well recognized that their farm system is average at best. If prospects don't perform on the Major League level (which by in large they haven't for the Giants) that is a telltale sign of a poor farm system.

That is a puzzling trade. I don't see why if I'm Sabean I make that trade, as he gave up a decent pitcher for a guy who's barely an upgrade. If Sabean was really trying to get a better player he should have gone after Nick Johnson.

well the giants getting Garko proves that Ishikawa wasn't delivering enough. boy the Giants defense looked awful last night.
I'm going to wensdays game and i get to see Matt Cain Pitch should be fun

Wildcard is all they need to go all the way ! Well, I hope they do :)

Ishikawa usually would start hitting when his job was on the line not this time, but it might be a platoon of sorts. The Giants havent given up completely on Ishikawa yet, but it might be more for his glove than his bat. The trade for Garko better be a precursor to another move, Garko is at best an average hitter, so is Freddy Sanchez soon to be in the mix as well? As for the defense usually the only ones who look terrible consistently is Fred Lewis and the complete waste that is Edgar Renteria. I kinda want Omar back with his .180 average at least he can get to balls that arent directly hit to him. Have fun on Wednesday it should be good.

Shayd who's this Everidge kid? Can he finally be the answer at first for the A's? Seems like the typical player in A's mold, high OPS and OBP.

Ahhh, these small acquisitions the Red Sox are making are driving me nuts. Sure LaRoche has produced well so far, but I can't imagine he will stay this consistent. The other two were sent directly to the minors for the time being, so that doesn't really help now.

I am a bit afraid of what they might do with the trade deadline coming and a rumored "blockbuster trade" in the works. Halladay would be nice, but his asking price isn't worth it.

Things should get very interesting in the next few days.

Wow, watching the Cubs & Astros game and Reed Johnson just hit a come backer to the mound. It hit off the pitcher's glove and ricocheted inside his jersey. He looked everywhere for it, and didn't realize where it was until Johnson had already reached first. I've never seen anything like that before. Here's my question though - if he realizes it, runs to first, and beats the runner to the bag, is that an out? What's the rule on that? I'm fairly certain you have to control the ball with an appendage, but I'm not sure.

Watch for this play on SportsCenter, definitely not something you see every game.

i think that same thing happened last year (or sometime in the last 3 years)

ground ball to short....right into angel berroa's jersey

he also was unaware...so i dont know the rule on that...i imagine out

The thing with Garko is that his defensive inabilities really effect his value. He's a full 12 runs below average defensively, and only about 10 above with the bat. That's not a good combo for the Giants.

As for Tommy, he was a 10th rounder in 2004, I believe, but has been promoted through the minors really slowly, despite the fact that he's performed pretty well at each level. That's primarily because he's been blocked for the most part by people like Chris Carter and Sean Doolittle, who have performed a bit better at an younger age. Is he the answer at 1st? I can definitely say he's been making a strong case for himself in the minors so far. Although it's a small sample size, the guy has been OPSing over 1.000 this season in AAA. Barton probably has the edge defensively, but Everidge is still a solid defender, and his bat looks to be a plus. I'm excited to see him brought up, because as of last year I had kinda figured the A's just wanted to make him a career minor leaguer. He looks like he could be a 20+ homer guy and OPS about .850, with solid defense, which definitely makes him valuable to an A's offense that has looked beyond inept this season. Undoubtedly he's got the talent, it's just a matter of proving it at the major league level, which I personally think he will.

If I'm not mistaken, it was Fukudome that hit it, but nonetheless a funny play.

His jersey is considered part of the playing field, so a ball hit in play that enters a players jersey is still a live ball, and play would continue.

Before last nights game in Boston I got to see Evridge play for the Rivercats(aaa) team he was playing 3rd base looked like a good hitter from what i saw then and he proved it with that rocket off Papelbon.

Yeah, I had a chance to catch a day game in Sacramento a few weeks ago where he went 3-3 with 2 walks, a homer, a double and a single. The guy kills the ball, and looks like a natural hitter.

Indeed it was. Kosuke got the start yesterday. I suppose it was just wishful thinking on my part that Johnson was in the lineup instead.

No biggie, I actually thought you were right, but the MLB Network just had it on. :)

They have had more contributers to their big league club than I think you realize. Not every "prospect" is going to pan out in the big leagues, and more importantly not every "prospect" is going to put up Ryan Braun or Evan Longoria numbers. A lot of their young players have contributed, just not at all star caliber (Hello, they are in the WC race this year)

Its impossible to tell how a player is going to make it in the big leagues until they get there and play. Thats why they are called prospects. Every team has 10-15 potential MLB players yet only 3 maybe 4 ever make it to the club full time.

You have guys like Fred Lewis, Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Sandavol, Ishikawa, Schierholtz, etc...

I am by no means saying they have the best farm or have had the best farm system in the last 10 years, but there is a reason they are in the wild card chase this year.

Like I said not every guy is going to pan out in the big leagues, for every one guy who puts up SOLID numbers in the big leagues there were 10 prospects in the same farm system who just didnt cut it.
