MLB 2009 thread

My season only lasts up to the trade deadline. A's ownership will most likely make a move to take them out of contention

My Mets finally did something to fix their woeful bullpen, but with holes in the rotation and OF still unfilled (Tatis and Murphy will not get it done imo) my expectation is still pretty tepid to say the least. After losing out on Lowe Mets are down to Ollie, Sheets, Garland, and Wolf. Not exactly the same as Lowe (except Sheets who's oft-injured) but what can you do? I hope Wilpons can put their cheapness aside and put together a WS caliber ballclub finally. Sick of seeing my team collapse year after year.

My prediction of 2009 finish:
AL East - Boston Red Sox
AL Central - Minnesota Twins
AL West - LA Angels
Wildcard - NY Yankees

NL EAST - Philadelphia Phillies
NL Central - Chicago Cubs
NL West - Arizona Diamondbacks (Dodgers if they sign Manny)
Wildcard - NY Mets

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
The Chicago Tribune has said that they plan on announcing the new owner of the Cubs sometime this week.

hmm yankees have issues at 2nd base and centerfield plus no obvious use for nick swisher except as trade bait plus there is no prof that posada's shoulder is 100%. the whitesox will not win the central. the a's will challenge the angels. nl easy goes through philly till the mets man up, the central should be a cubs haven but watch out for st.louis, the west will be the diamondbacks or the giants

Whats wrong with Cano at second? He had a very dissapointing year but he should bounce back.

The thing with Swisher is he can play all the OF positions aswell as first. He will get some playing time in center this year.

Both Swisher and Cano should improve their hitting this year considering the line up they have around them.

My bad Cano is fine i mixed up his postion with Melky's . hmm Swisher best postion First, not happening because of Texiria in the outfield Damon has left and Nady has right if you play Swisher in center you pitchers will give up extra hits as he is comptent but not great oh and dh belongs to Matuski
so tell me where does Swisher play unless some is hurt?

A reason to trade Swisher?? Outfield is his position, but you want him patrolling center? Does he have a place on the Yankees? How about Jeff Kent retiring? Says he wants to wear a Dodgers cap when he's enshrined in Cooperstown. Go wash a truck on your ranch, Jeff.

The Yankees' signing of CC and AJ would be a big lift. We have to pray AJ does will after a contract year. We have yet to see if Joba will be able to get into a sustained run at 4th. If Phil Hughes/Ian Kennedy (looks like Andy won't be back in pinstripes) ably brings up the rear of the rotation, next to those 3 and Wang, it would be a great year for NY. Go Yankees!

aj always has a big year when it's time for more money and his medical history isn't great. Swisher at this point would cover center but flyball pitchers will give up more hits. i watched him in Oakland when he was forced to play center he was okay but much better in left or right and decent at first basicaly he gived the yankess depth 300-400 ab's max unless someone is hurt or traded

Swisher's natural position is first.

Since he's now been relegated to outfield duty, the Yankees would be wise to put him in right, followed by left. Personally, I think he's there as trade bait first and as a potential member of the team second.

Swisher can play center.

He played 70 games for the White Sox at CF last year and 59 the year before with Oakland.

I predict he will probably play 100-120 games at center this year while playing first for Tex when he gets break and the corner OF when they need a break. He will also play DH a little bit.

Yeah, he can play it, but, as I said, his natural position is first.

If he gets significant playing time in New York, I will genuinely be surprised. I say this not to offend any Yankee fans, but he's probably not going to fit the mold as a typical Yankee hitter.

I think, as a Yankee fan, that Swisher doesn't quite fit...i mean, when we got him there was a desperate need to fill the gap at first seeing as Miranda isn't quite ready for the big leagues...but now that Teixeira is playing first Swisher can either strengthen our bench or play an outfield position. And with young guys like Gardner and Cabrera (who will hopefully bounce back) and a guy like Nady in right there really seems to be no need for Swisher other than the bench...remember Matsui (who may DH) and don't forget about Damon. He was probably the Yankees most consistent hitter last season. He's always a reliable player but doesn't have an especially strong arm. But look at guys like Bernie Williams...not the most powerful CF but a solid position player and a great bat to have in the lineup. I think it will be interesting to see what happens with the outfield...Swisher is a good, young utility player to have...haven't the Braves shown interest in Swisher over the years?

Also, I apologize for kinda jumping into the conversation kinda randomly like this lol.

I don's think the AL Central is easy! Detroit underachieved last year, so I expect them to get better. Cleveland made some great aquisitions in Wood and DeRosa, and the Twins manage to put together a competitive club year after year without really making a big splash via trades, free agency, or re-signing their owns high priced stars!!!

That having been said, I am a HUGE White Sox fan (was at the play-in game last year!) and I am curious to see what happens. I think their weakest link is pitching. Relying on the young arms worked last year, but added more and factoring in fatigue, I think it is going to be rough.

Looking forward to it!

Yeah I agree...the whole Joba thing throws me a little...hopefully they don't work him too hard. With a workhorse like CC heading our rotation and solid guys like Wang who are able to consistently go the distance, it doesn't bother me as much as it did last season. I was worried that there would be no setup man either, seeing as Rivera won't be pitching forever. But hopefully we scoop up Bruney again and make him a household name in NY...he's been nothing but fantastic for us...all he needs to do is stay healthy. I'm kinda bummed about Andy because he's been such a staple in the franchise but I think a guy like Hughes will have a breakout season. He's my favorite prospect and behind what looks like a very strong rotation (granted Burnett stays healthy) I think he'll work some magic. Honestly, I think the reason he came back so strong at the end of the year last season and did so well in the fall league is because of those glasses he was fitted for. Call it crazy...I have very high hopes for Hughes this season...Kennedy not so much but he'll get there.

@pancha:

yeah when relying on young pitching you gotta make sure the bullpen is loaded with talent...being a yanks fan I have seen the bullpen get out of a lot of jams caused by inexperience on the mound (or in the case of the 2008 season, anyone but Mike Mussina on the mound!)

well the marlins may give the braves lots of trouble they are quite good, just done in by a bad owner and terrible facilites situation. the nats won't be good untill 2011 or 2012 to much rebulding to do espically ptiching

look swisher will be traded if not during spring traing then during the season unless they are keeping him because nady has only 1 year left on his deal while swisher has 2
