They should have bought android :p (or at least they shouldn't have used apple's cloud service)

From what I've read, the hacking was done on individual accounts using the "forgot my password" feature, with the hacker(s) knowing certain personal verification data (birthday, etc.). Apparently it wasn't a hack of the iCloud service, like what happened with Target and just the other day, Home Depot. The most unsecure mobile OS in existence is Android. The most secure is probably Blackberry QNX. Windows Phone and iOS are somewhere in the middle. With Android, most any app (whether it's Facebook or one of the innocuous flashlight apps) can not just swipe your picture files, but also your entire contacts list, and Facebook got caught data mining users' phone numbers and addresses using Android - couldn't do it with iOS, Blackberry or even Windows Phone. This is why many corporate IT departments don't allow Android devices on their networks - mine included. I can use iOS, Blackberry or Windows Phone on the secure network, but not Android.

While I agree that what happened is not good (any breach or theft of personal data is bad), I am bothered that SUCH a big deal is made about stolen nudie pics of celebs (the guy who stole the Johansson's pics got 10 years??? Really?), but when Google or Facebook violate their own terms of service, they don't even get fined. And 10 years is more than many/most white collar criminals get for crimes involving tens or hundreds of millions of dollars.

A storm in a tea cup, IMO.

If they had just stored their pictures wherever Lois Lerner stored her email nobody would've ever found 'em.

Thankfully, I had just sat my coffee down when I read that. Otherwise...

Awesome post. And interesting point. And yeah, he got 10 years.

I'm kind of sickened that there are a lot of people out there and sadly on here also that are willing to trivialize, downplay, and worse of all actively take part in what is a violation of somebody else. Lets not mince words here. Lets not try to rationalize what's despicable for your own pleasure. They were VIOLATED. Very unwise actions on somebody else's part also doesn't excuse oneself of one's own wrongdoing. What would you think if it happened to your wife, sister, or daughter or even husband, brother or son? All those people are that to somebody else even if somehow you are such a scum you can't bring yourself to care about fellow people, you should at least recognize that about them.

Frankly, I consider everybody that willingly gathered or looked at the pictures assholes, maybe worse, because that is what you are.

I feel bad for them.
I saw some of the photos of Jennifer but only because some women in a private FB group were posting them (which luckily did turn into a bunch of hot ladies sharing their own iPhone nudes).
When I first started nude modeling at 18, I had a photo hosting account hacked and photos of my pussy ended up on the internet before I even intended for them to. At that point I was pretty tame with my nudes so the fact that I found out because some guy who was being a dick on an internet forum to me said, "nice pussy lips" in an argument.. not fun.
I remember my heart racing, shaking, being so absolutely livid. Yes, it's a lesson learned (I post even dirtier content now but am still not overly keen on people who try to give it away.) But it's still unfair to say the women are IDIOTS for not knowing iCould was storing deleted content and was able to be hacked into.

Plus, honestly, from what I've seen.. they looked just like anybody else's iPhone nudes.
I think it's pretty pathetic to have the hacking talent to pull this off and not be doing something way more amazing with it.. instead of desperately seeking celebrity nudes so you can get off on a sense of entitlement and knowing the person wasn't a willing participant.

Consent is way sexier.

You know something, fuck this Hollywood hoity-toity shit. Maybe wrong with the invasion of privacy but with the sentencing demands they make these crooks out to be worse than murderers. Use some common sense and have some respect for your body. If things go sideways you share blame even if there is no cage for you to be pushed into. Still guilty of being an idiot. Let the ladies who charge be the exhibitionists. They exhibit themselves for money and you are a thief too if you move in on their action.

Ahh, the good ol' secret FB groups. Those were some interesting times.

Dude, get off your soap box. Anybody that's ever looked at a celeb sex tape (before they started "leaking" them themselves) would be assholes, or worse then? Give me a break.

THIS. Absolutely. I have to admit I'm pretty pissed about this whole leak thing - but mostly what pisses me off is all of the reactions of "Oh, well they shouldn't have taken nudes then." They're still human beings who should have their rights to privacy respected. Yes, all celebrities understand that they can't expect the same amount of privacy as non-celebrities -- but being in the public eye does NOT mean one is giving up one's right to privacy entirely nor, more importantly, their right to give consent.

I don't need to go troll around for stolen nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence or Kate Upton to get excited about how hot they are. I find it a lot sexier to stare at consensually shared photos of them in skimpy clothing and imagine what's under it.

Why shouldn't they be considered that! I don't give a shit if somebody doesn't have the balls to admit to themselves of what they are, much less protecting the feeling of people that act like that. I stand by my statement. Not only do I stand by it, but if could have somehow made it any clearer or stronger I would have.

Maybe you are one of those people? In that case don't blame me for you or other people being assholes when I state that reality. I don't control people's actions. I'm not the one that make other people conduct themselves like scum.

Is a legal matter, very interesting for lawyers.
The owner of the pics is not the lady on them, but the one who took them.

I wouldn't imagine that logic holding up in a court of law unless the "model" signed a release to the "photographer".
Considering they're just iPhone photos, that's iffy..and would just further invade their privacy by having to even disclose who took them.
It's still on their device after all.

I couldn't care less about your judgments or anyone else's. I have absolutely ZERO shame in wanting to see their pictures or sex tapes if they're out there. I'm not the one that hacked their phones. I'm not the one that stole their shit. I'm not the one that leaked their shit on the net. And I'm not the one that masterminded the whole scheme that's been going on for years, and will continue to carry on. But if you or anyone else wants to lump me in the same category as those responsible for all this, just because I want to see pictures or vids, then you go ahead and you do that. Guess I'll just be the asshole then

Believe it or not, I took a couple of photographs of my best man, to a photo store, to get copies for his widow, after he had died, and they wouldn't copy them, unless I could produce the negatives, because the photographer had the rights, not me. I had all of the negatives, and the photographer was a neighbor, that did it as side work, so I was given everything when I paid her, but I just didn't want to dig through everything for specific negatives, when I had the photos handy. I was even in 2 of the pictures I wanted copied, but no go, I had to give them the negatives for the copies. Although, if we're talking about someones phone, I can't see the person pressing the button, having rights to someones content, on the owners phone, if that makes sense.

Agreed. Im way more excited about Akira Lane doing hardcore scenes than I would ever be about leaked private nude photos of celebrities.

Since my post probably falls within the scope of what you're saying, I just want to make clear where I'm coming from. When I said that this is a storm in a tea cup, I mean that in the greater scheme of things, this phishing scam (iCloud was not hacked, as the media misreported) was no different than any other, except that celebrities were targeted and nude pictures were involved, as opposed to what hackers typically go after: financial information. There is no argument from me that what happened was wrong and illegal. But where I roll my eyes is when when people like Hillary Duff use the "shark! shark!" reaction to this to call the FBI to investigate pictures of some woman who is posting nude pictures of herself and claiming to be Duff. The FBI for that? Really?! Whoever took that call should have laughed at her and slammed the phone down. I don't even see why the FBI is investigating the nude pic phishing scam that got Upton's and other celebs' nude pics. Why is that an FBI issue any more than all the other online crimes that take place??? When my uncle's mother-in-law fell victim to a phishing scam and they diverted her Social Security check to another account, not only did the FBI not investigate that, the state police wouldn't even get involved. A 90-something year old woman had to go without her SS income for nearly six months and she was NOT reimbursed by SS. When my mother's credit card number was stolen and some yob bought himself a new stereo system (and a nice lunch) in Florida, the FBI didn't give her a call. No cop from any agency contacted her. When someone filed my state tax returns a couple of years ago and tried to steal my refund, no FBI, no state police, no local police.

So the issue of file theft, identity theft, phishing and online fraud is a very serious one. It's a huge and growing issue. And it certainly does need to be addressed. So I'm all for prosecuting these types of crimes. But what winds me up is when five or six FBI agents run in front of the TV cameras to show that they're investigating the heinous crime of theft of Kate Upton's T&A pics, but they're totally asleep at the wheel when it comes to anything short of the kidnapping of a non-celebrity.

That's more of an issue with them not trying hard enough or caring in non-celebrity cases, not that they are doing the wrong thing here. If something goes negative for me, or justice is denied, I don't then wish bad things on everybody else as some for of cosmic karmic payback for the world to make everybody as miserable as myself. Plus, this isn't just some copyright infringement or theft case. Those would be bad enough as it is, but in some places and for some people what happened to them is a form of sexual assault, it should be. I also would be just as pissed off it happened to a women down the street as I would be it happening to an A-list celebrity. Nobody deserves it.

Sort of like I said before, lets imagine this hypothetical situation. If you have or if someday you have a daughter, and on her 18th birthday or over (just to leave the whole child porn aspect of this alone for now with is even worse still) some putrid slimeball sneaks up to her window when she's unaware and snaps a bunch of very intimate maybe even explicit photos of her naked, maybe even with her significant other, and then rushes off to sell them, share them with a select group of peers, or post them on the internet how the hell would you feel? How would you feel if gigantic portion of the world, all doucebags, got to look at it because they wanted to. You know what, I have a feeling it wouldn't be "a storm in a tea cup" then, would it?

What if your daughter was very emotionally scarred from that experience as I think a lot of people would be? I sure the hell known how I would feel. I would be deeply enraged. That would be the only way I could describe it. I might be pissed at falling for phishing scam, or losing money but it would pail compared to that. I would like to think I wouldn't take vengeance on them, as I have tried to devote my life to not wanting revenge, only fair justice. I would also hope I could be forgiving if somebody that wrongs other truly repents, becomes a good person, and does their best to make proper restitution. You know what thought, I've known people in my life that couldn't do that. This would drive them past what any money scam could. They would have made it their mission in life to kill the person that wronged their little girl like that. Some of them would have even made their ends very painful and horrible.

Almost all those people were cared about by others out there. They were somebody’s little girl. Maybe we should stop treating others as emotionless objects when it suits our enjoyment and think of others as human beings just like us, because that is what they are. Maybe we should put ourselves in a place that ask, “what if that was my sister or daughter instead of some distant celeb.” I think some have a tendency of looking at celebrities or people like the performers on this website and forget that they are people and have the same feelings as everybody else.

Some people don’t think. They don’t think or worse don’t care of the repercussions of their actions. Money can at least be gotten again. Even broken bones can heal. Some scars can’t though. Maybe a lot, maybe the vast majority, of the women that were hacked will have the strength to end up brushing this off, learning from their mistakes, and be perfectly fine getting on with their lives. (And even if they do that still doesn’t lessen or absolve those that did wrong.) I think good many will. I very much hope that is the case, but what of the ones that can’t, even if it’s deep inside where it’s not obvious to those not close to them? See that’s the thing about being violated. Money and objects can be fixed. Violating somebody is an attack that hurts their very selves. Sometimes there is no recovering from that. The people that think this is a tempest in a teacup are the ones that totally trivialize the serious nature of what happened or have trouble having empathy with others.
