With his left leg not bothering him any longer Filipino boxing hero and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao is in perfect shape for his showdown with big and strong Joshua Clottey at the $1.2 billion Dallas Cowboys Stadium on March 13 in a fight to be telecast in the Philippines by Solar Sports.
Conditioning expert Alex Ariza said Pacquiao added an Irish fighter whose name he couldn’t recall to his list of sparring partners with whom he went a total of ten rounds.
The sparring partners included Ghana's Abdulla Amidu (18-0, 17 knockouts)and longtime sparring partners Raymund Beltran and David Rodela.
LOS ANGELES -- The frantic ferocity of Manny Pacquiao's training camps at the stuffy Wild Card Gym clearly indicate he feels every fight could be his last.
This time around, Pacquiao knows he really might be done with boxing -- for a while at least.
Pacquiao is training in Hollywood for his March 13 fight against Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium while simultaneously running for a congressional seat in his native Philippines. It's the latest move in his exhaustive quest apparently to become all things to all people in a homeland that already has embraced him as a boxing champion, a commercial pitchman, a movie star, a singer and its most famous person.
But if he beats Clottey on March 13 and then gets elected eight weeks later, as many expect, how can he balance a burgeoning political career with the months of intense training necessary for a former flyweight to survive bigger opponents such as Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya and Clottey?
Well known boxing trainer and respected cut-man Lenny De Jesus says Ghana’s Joshua Clottey is going to give pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao a rough time when they clash in “The Event” at the $1.2 billion Dallas Cowboys Stadium on March 13.
In an exclusive overseas telephone interview with BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, De Jesus said Clottey “ is in tremendous condition and I think we are going to give all we’ve got against Manny Pacquiao.” And by De Jesus' estimates that may be a little too much for the "Fighter of the Decade."
De Jesus noted that the former world champion is “a solid 147 pounder, very strong. A lot of people underestimate him but I stress that Manny Pacquiao has a real fight on his hands. I think this is going to be a real test with a strong and a willing competitor .”
The Clottey trainer who is in charge of his training camp and basically does everything, reminded us that he had worked with Pacquiao in six fights, the last being the first Erik Morales bout in June 2004 in which Pacquiao suffered a nasty gash over his eye because of an accidental clash of heads although referee Joe Cortez mistakenly ruled the cut was caused by a punch.
Ghana’s Joshua Clottey and his trainer, the well-known and respected cut-man Lenny De Jesus have a great deal of respect for pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao but that doesn’t mean they are not ready to beat him in their showdown at the $1.2 billion Dallas Cowboys Stadium on March 13 in a fight to be telecast in the Philippines on Sunday by Solar Sports.
The strategy will be for Clottey who will come in around 155 pounds at fight time to try to wear down Pacquiao by making him punch himself out in seeking to fulfill trainer Freddie Roach’s prediction of a knockout in nine rounds.
In a telephone conversation with insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports after Clottey’s media workout at the Kingsway Gym in New York, trainer De Jesus said he plans to let Clottey come in at 155 pounds “at the most, so he can move , so he can do his thing. We are ready to roll.”
Former champion Joshua Clottey will try to wear down WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. Pacquiao's stamina is one of*his biggest advantages over opponents. Clottey*has figured out a strategy to stop it. He*put together a plan*to make Pacquiao punch himself out. "We all know Manny Pacquiao. When he comes, he starts throwing. I'm just ready. My body can take it. When he throws on me, I will block him and that will confuse him. He'll throw 30, and I'll throw four. The four will connect. The 30, I'll block most. I will wear him down. For sure," Clottey told Reuters.
If that strategy doesn't work until the very end, Clottey will have his back against the wall. He will*end up losing most of the rounds, and the fight, unless he knocks Pacquiao out.
Clottey's*manager Vinnie Scolpino*said his fighter wants to*shut the mouth of*Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach. Roach has predicted a knockout win for his fighter. Clottey wants to teach him a lesson.
"He wants to beat (Pacquiao's trainer) Freddie Roach. That's his motivation," Scolpino said. "He wants to put him in his place. He beats Pacquiao, he puts Freddie in his place, too. Roach says he (Pacquiao) is going to knock him out.
Trainer Freddie Roach is convinced, Manny Pacquiao will become the first fighter to stop Joshua Clottey. Pacquiao defends the WBO welterweight title against Clottey on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Roach has studied dozens of tapes on Clottey and thinks he knows his boxing abilities*like a book. He doesn't think the former champion will last to the tenth.*
"I hear Vegas has the over/under for rounds at 10. I'll take the under. We've watched a lot of tapes on Clottey. He's predictable. Manny will be the first to stop him," Roach told the LA Times.
David Diaz (35-2) is looking to get his second win in a row since losing his WBC lightweight title to Manny Pacquiao in 2008.* The lightweight contender talks to BoxingScene.com about his upcoming fight with Humberto Soto for the vacant title.* Diaz talks about what winning back the same title he lost to Manny Pacquiao in 2008 would mean to him and he also gives his picks for*Manny Pacquiao versus Joshua Clottey fight and the Floyd Mayweather versus Shane Mosley*in this exclusive interview.
WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will be ready to go on fight night, says his trainer Freddie Roach. Pacquiao defends the title on Saturday night against Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. Roach, speaking with Fox Sports, said Clottey has nothing in his boxing arsenal that scares him in the fight. Based on watching hours of tapes, he thinks Clottey does the same moves over and over in every fight.
"Nope, [he doesn't scare us]. He's very predictable. We know every move he makes. We've studied him for the last month. I'm tired of watching Clottey, but I'll maybe watch a bit more so I don't miss nothing," Roach said.
Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao looked flawless in his final workout at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles on Monday before taking the flight to Dallas, Texas aboard a specially chartered plane along with his charming wife Jinkee and a planeload of 160 people.
Trainer Freddie Roach is not worried about much when it comes to Manny Pacquiao's WBO welterweight title defense on Saturday night against Joshua Clottey.*Roach is confident he knows Clottey's style like a book. He says the former champion from Ghana has big holes that Pacquiao will exploit with boxing and movement.
"He'll wait for you to throw a combination and then, when you've stopped, he'll throw back. So if you stand in front of him, you're an idiot,"*Roach said to Reuters. "We're not going to do that. He's not going to be able to find us."
The one thing that worries Roach is Clottey's head. After watching hours of footage on Clottey, Roach thinks he uses his head on the inside. He wants Pacquiao to stay on the outside at all times to avoid head clashes.
"Sometimes he uses his head," Roach said. "If you fall into the pocket with him, his best punch is an uppercut and his second best punch is a headbutt. So we're not going to go in there. We're going to fight him at distance."
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Manny Pacquiao has big plans for Saturday night -- after his fight against Joshua Clottey.
Pacquiao will be the guest of honor at his after-fight party, and plans to provide the entertainment. The budding singer will take the stage and entertain fans with his voice, after the welterweight champion uses his fists.
That's a good indication of how confident he is about beating Clottey.
Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, is predicting his man will win in the late rounds. He's not predicting a knockout because Clottey has never been KO'd.
Meanwhile, Clottey is predicting victory at the main event for the first fight card at the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium. Promoters say the 45,000 seats are nearly sold.
BOB ARUM:* I am really excited.* You get stale doing the same thing over and over again.* Going back to casinos to put on these big events, I think that going to this fabulous stadium like Cowboys Stadium bringing the fights to the people, I think that boxing once again establishes boxing as being one of the major sports in this country as it is so many other places in the world.
JERRY JONES:* It is great to be on the phone in this workout room and I feel like we’re ready to go practice football.* My wife and I would travel the country to watch fights.* We saw Bob’s fight at the Superdome and we’ve been to Las Vegas and are great fans of Las Vegas.* We saw Ali fight several times and saw Sugar Ray and Marvin Hagler fight a lot.* I had more time to go to the fights but since the Cowboys I have been gassed a couple of times and watch Showtime and HBO and it’s been always something that I have followed.* It is unique that where I grew up in Arkansas we had a great fighter named Sonny Ingram, a Golden Gloves legend and he had a great boxing program out of my boy’s club and I lived a boy’s club.* We had great fighters come through there and I weighed about 100 pounds and we’d get up there and box it up when we wanted to so I had involvement as a youngster but more involved as a fan.
A member of Joshua Clottey's team, Kwaku Gyamfi, says WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is going to the hospital after the former champion*from Ghana beats him down on Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. Gyamfi told ABS-CBN that Pacquiao is going to get hurt by the bigger Clottey.
“Manny’s going straight to the hospital after the fight,” Gyamfi said. “Manny will be all cut up and bruised. He’s going to be hit by a brick.”Pacquiao is almost an 8-1 favorite to win the fight.
Gyamfi says the Filipino champ will be too busted up to even sing with his friends at the post-fight after party.
“He won’t be able to perform after the fight. For the first time he won’t be able to perform,” said Gyamfi.
Former champion Joshua Clottey is not concerned with the speed or punch volume of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Clottey*challenges Pacquiao for the title on Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Clottey has a good defense. He plans to block everything Pacquiao throws and then he will counter with his own shots.
"It doesn't matter if he throws 1,000 punches if I'm blocking them. I don't waste punches," Clottey said.
Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach is not worried about Clottey's defense. He think his man will break through in the late rounds and finish Clottey off. If Clottey is going to stand there and just*block punches, Roach sees a lot of rounds going to Pacquiao.
"Blocking punches doesn't win fights. We can stop him in the later rounds. The accumulation of punches Clottey will be taking in this fight he's never seen before. I don't think he'll be able to handle it," Roach said.
Top Rank.com will provide a full coverage on a live stream broadcast of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey weigh-in at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Friday, March 12. The live broadcast will begin 6 pm eastern/3 pm pacific on Top Rank's new, revamped website.* Michael Buffer will be the host.
Top Rank has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that only a few hundred tickets are remaining for Saturday's pay-per-view clash between WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Joshua Clottey. The event, taking place in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, was scaled to seat 45,000 fans.
The attendance number is a strong indication of just how popular Pacquiao has become. Clottey is not exactly a household name in the state of Texas. Hell, Clottey is not exactly a household name in New York. This card is being sold on the strength of Pacquiao's name.
Even with all of the controversy, Clottey being a big underdog, criticism about the undercard, and the lack of a 24/7 from HBO - 45,000 tickets are going to be sold. Pacquiao may live in the Philippines, but he is certainly one of the biggest draws in the United States.
This coming Saturday, Antonio Margarito will be sitting ringside at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The former welterweight champion will be scouting the welterweight bout between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey. Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, who promotes Margarito and the two main eventers on Saturday, has told BoxingScene.com in several interviews that he wants to make a Pacquiao-Margarito fight later in the year.
"I'm definitely here to help make that fight, I want that fight to happen. Everyone in Mexico wants to see me fight Pacquiao," Margarito told The Los Angeles Times.
Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya feels Manny Pacquiao will have an easy time with Joshua Clottey on Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Texas. De La Hoya says Pacquiao is too fast and Clottey wastes too much time being defensive and doesn't spend enough time being offensive. Clottey's style is made for Pacquiao, says Oscar.
"I think Manny Pacquiao will have an easy time with Joshua Clottey,"*De La Hoya*said to Sky Sports News. "Styles make fights, and his (Clottey's) defence is one where he blocks his punches, then he has to bring his hands down to look at you, and then throw punches.
Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao may give away around ten pounds when he enters the ring in “The Event” against Ghana’s tough guy Joshua Clottey at the unbelievable $1.2 billion Dallas Cowboys Stadium on Saturday.
At the official weigh-in which drew a huge crowd of predominantly Pacquiao supporters, the Filipino champion weighed 145 ¾ pounds while Clottey who reportedly had to shed off some excess weight the previous day tipped the scales at the exact welterweight limit of 147.
Clottey said earlier that he was going to have a hearty meal after the weigh in and the consensus is that we will enter the ring at around 160 pounds on fight night although his trainer Lenny De Jesus told us the other day that he wanted to*make sure Clottey comes in around 155 so his weight won’t slow him down against the super fast Pacquiao.
Pacquiao’s conditioning expert Alex Ariza said he expects Pacquiao to weight around 150 at fight time which would definitely give Clottey, who can take a big shot, an advantage in weight to go with his slight advantage in height which was evident when the two fighters posted for the media.
