Major decision this weekend....

So the company where I work offered me a job to get out of where I'm working now, which I don't like very much, and it's with an international project with lots of primo free travel to Europe and other places. I tentatively accepted with the new boss on Friday. Same pay, lateral move.

Than, another job I had applied for 6 weeks ago calls last night says the job is mine. What great timing!! lol It's to run my own section, commute will be worse and not much travel (all domestic), but it's more money and I'll have 12 people working for me... And to make matters even worse, when I explained to the guy that I waited as long as I could and accepted something in my company just yesterday, he says he will "do whatever he can do" to get me on board, which I assume means more money.

So I'm genuinely torn here... do I go back on my word to my current employer, take the extra money and better position with the headaches that come with being a "boss" again, or do I sit tight, accept the lesser salary, but have some continuity and international travel?

I guess it's a good problem to have so I'm not complaining, but I have to decide something my Sunday evening so I can let both parties know Monday morning... was up all night thinking about it. The timing jsut sucks, as I kind of already gave a "verbal" to the guy in my company, and either way I go I'm going to **** someone off I think.

Any advice board members? :dunno:

In the end the choice is yours, so I think I'll just post some questions that hopefully can help...

What things do you NOT like about these two jobs?

What do you expect from this travelling? You will be travelling to other countries, but will you have actually the chance to get to see something or will it be rush-rush to do the job and get back home? what impact will it have on your private life and free time? Always somewhere else?

Is it your job that you have now that you don't like, or is it the company and it's work policy that you don't like?

I have the impression that it's choice between something you would like to do, and a job that offers more money. But what would you like about that job that offers more money (besides the money)? Yes, you have people working for you and a better position, but what do you LIKE about it?

All good points.

1) The "boss" at the job that has the good travel abroad is a dick, and of course it's a lateral move, both of which are negatives. The other company seems good, I have a friend there, but the job is an unknown quality. That's the ****** in my estimation. And the other company is a bit more of a commute (extra 30 minutes each way every day).

2) Good question, I traveled a lot at my last job, it certainly is both good an bad aspects, and yes the work is usually intense on trips and it's not quite as much fun to travel for work as some people think it is who have never experienced it.

3) The current job situation sucks, hence why I am moving on either to the international affairs job within the company or the manager job. The current company is ok, not great, not intolerable. Again, it's kind of trading the devil you know for one you don't... it could be much better, or worse!

4) In the end, I suppose work is work unless you are an artist or something... it's not purely about the money, but really a question between trading current stability for a "step up" in money and title, but possibly being unhappy...

I thought about it like this last night: It's like you are dating someone and you aren't happy but also not unhappy, and you meet someone else who is hotter and seems nice but you don't know for sure until you date her for a while whether it's a better move in the long run. And you must choose, you can't date both! :1orglaugh

I'll tell you what: you take whatever job you decide on/want. I live close to D.C. You recommend me to take whatever job you don't. Problem solved? :1orglaugh

I'll respond to your above points one by one:

1. If you have a friend working at this other company, would he/she possibly be able to give you any more insight into the company and what position you might be taking? Maybe they know more about the job and what it might entail?

2. The work may be intense, but is it something you find you'd be able to put up with, despite the move and no raise in pay, and is it possible that doing so would eventually lead to more benefits/pay coming your way?

3. How long have you been with the current job you have now? Have you considered leaving before or been considered for a move within the company? Would it be worth it as I mentioned in number 1 to poke your friend's brain about this other job to try and gain some insight before you jump right in to a possibly unknown situation?

4. I think you ultimately need to ask yourself what your selling points are. Is it job security, more money, a better title, the idea that you may actually like what you're doing/where you are, etc. I think once you've identified what they are, hopefully your answer as to what you want to do should be clear.

I hope everything works out okay.

:) Yeah I know. Though choices. And it's not only what you choose, but what you don't choose in a way.

I used to work for a company where I had to travel now and then. I had to make sure I always had my papers up to date and the proper vaccinations, so if the boss told me I had to be on a plane by the end of the week I could do so. People always had this idea it was great and fun. Sometimes it was. But most of the time it were 'do or die'-projects: an impossible task in an impossible amount of time. It ment working up to 20 hours a day sometimes. At the time I liked it because I liked to solve the problems and it paid very good money, but I always needed a vacation afterwards. And I didn't have much of a personal life. Hence why I asked.

I have a different view on life now, mostly because of a depression I once had. Once I really liked jobs like I mentioned. It paid good, I loved solving problems, I had the chance to climb on the ladder and such. Now it's more about enjoying life. It's nice if a job pays good and if I have a certain 'status', and it's great if I can solve problems, but there's a limit to it now. I realize now that I work for a living instead of living for my work. That it's about what I do, my personal life, hanging out with friends, girls, do what I whant to do, and so on.
So that's why I put the focus on 'what do you like...'

It will always be a ******.

EDIT:

Good questions from ApolloBalboa

Any advice board members? :dunno:

Living out of a suitcase and being away from home sweet home for any great length of time will become a task in itself you can be sure.

Take the new job... if the commute is too much, you can always move away from the 'district of criminals'.

Go with the one that offers you more money, better benefits, and the one that provides the less stress in your life.

Thanks for the input! After much thought, I believe I'm going to take the longer commute and more money... after all, we are all whores, so you might as well get compensated for it :)

It will be a challenge and having people work for you is always and adventure, but I decided last night its time to shake things up and learn something new, though it's going to **** off my current employer, you gotta do what is best for you in the long run.

Cheers :****:
