Has anyone watched this show? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Men

It's been recommended to me, and I was thinking about buying season 1, but I'm so picky with my TV shows I don't know if it will be my thing.

It's by the creators of The Sopranos, and thats saying something.

Just wanted to hear any opinions of it that you guys might have.

Mad Men is not "by the creators of The Sopranos". David Chase, the main force behind The Sopranos, has nothing to do with Mad Men.
But some of the writers/directors/producers that worked on The Sopranos now work on Mad Men. For example Alan Taylor who directed several episode of some of HBO's best and most successful shows like The Sopranos, Carnivàle, Deadwood, Rome, Six Feet Under or Sex And The City also directed four episodes for Mad Men. The creator of Mad Men is Matthew Weiner. He was also one of the producers and writers of the fifth and sixth season of The Sopranos.
Mad Men gives you meticulously and flawlessly designed and matched sets/wardrobe, nice lighting and camera work, beautiful directing, good actors, thoughtful and elaborate dialogues and much more. It's a social study of America in the early 1960s, rather slow paced but with a lot of depth.
What it is not, is action packed car chases, exploding nuclear bombs, breathtaking shoot-outs, brutalizing martial arts fights or half naked, tanned chicks with silicone boobs. That you should know before deciding to buy it. Or you will be severely disappointed.

Well I didn't know that, I was told that when someone was trying to get me into it.

I never thought it would be. Why would a show about an ad agency have any of those things? :dunno: (Except maybe the silicone boobs)

I didn't want to insinuate that you're looking for "light fare" or something like that. ;) I just wanted to make very clear what shouldn't be expect from the show.
I lend season one to a friend of mine who normally has a rather good taste in films and series, but who sadly is bored quite easily. He didn't like it. Didn't even finish the second episode. Shame, really. It's a great show.

Season 1 is only £12 on dvd, seems silly for me not to buy it.

It is a fantastic show - I was hooked from the first episode. But I do agree that those who lean more toward fast pacing in their tv shows will be disappointed.

to me, though, it's a show that can do little wrong.
