What the fuck should he be grateful for? Being humiliated on national television? Being lied to? Being quit on in the Eastern Conference Finals last year?
I think Gilbert took James' decision way too personally. What does he expect James to do? Its not that hard to understand that a 25 year old kid, who has had everything, including hundreds of millions of dollars, handed to him since he was 18 years old is hard pressed to understand simple social graces or respect the concept of loyalty, or a dignified exit from a place that has worshiped him (IMO undeservingly and to a fault) for the last 7+ years.
If anything Gilbert, as a businessman himself, should be able to comprehend the underlying issues here. As well, even though the franchise is tremendously devalued at this point, Gilbert has to, at least privately if not otherwise, appreciate the fact that during LeBron's 7 year tenure he single handedly raised attendance by around 5,000 per game and raised attendance revenues by approximately $20m annually, not to mention the on-site revenue increases in the forms of concessions, merchandise, parking revenues, media sponsorships etc.
So, yeah, while LeBron's departure may be a financial blow to the Cavs, his being there for the last 7 years greatly improved their yearly revenues, not to mention the fact that at least for the last 7 years people outside of Cleveland gave a shit about Cleveland, which is something that IMO Gilbert should at least acknowledge. I'm not saying he should be happy about it, but he should at least have a bit of perspective on the situation.
We didn't see him publicly thanking James for the millions of dollars he single handedly brought to the franchise over the last 7 years, but he's not at all abashed about indirectly criticizing him for taking those revenues elsewhere when he leaves the team. Double standard, and just kind of a tasteless reaction from a seemingly classless billionaire IMO.
