73 years ago today, the invasion of Okinawa took place. Some of the most brutal fighting in the war. If you've seen any documentaries on it, you have seen some serious brutality.

Okinawa and Iwo were isolated islands on the fringe perimeters of Japan, and that was how brutal it was.
The absolutely scary thing is that they both would just have been a small taste of what would have been expected if they invaded the mainland. Mountainous terrain (which could shelter from a bombing campaign), literally the bulk of the population and everything the forces kept for a last stand. And unlike Berlin, there would have been nowhere to "breakout".

I think both the Americans and Japanese are glad it didn't come to that.

Depleted uranium is incredibly dense. Those are what come out of that big ass canon in the nose of an A10 Warthog. They use them to shred tanks, The thing is, they still have small traces of radioactivity, which is why, the canon in the A10, doesn't eject the shells and let them fall to earth, it sends them back through a chain system, and stores them in the plane until it lands. At that point, they remove, and I would assume reuse them. I know there's a video somewhere on youtube of the ground crew performing that task. They may not even use them anymore, because of the radiation, which may be one of the reasons why it's such a big deal.

It's interesting to see that DU is not banned or covered by any UN treaty. From what I've read, it's because the tests are mixed at best, and there's no conclusive evidence of its toxicity. Of course, it doesn't mean there's no danger. Methinks it's because it's a military advantage only certain countries have access to, and they don't want to give it up.

It gives putsky free reign to use DU of his own, so it will be interesting to see if he does (likely), and what effect it will have.

JTF2 personnel are seen by other special forces soldiers as being paid more and outfitted with better equipment, according to reports compiled for the leaders of the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM). There were complaints about how poorly JTF2 treated other special forces personnel at times. The unit is also seen as receiving more support from military leadership.

Interesting article on the tension between elite special forces. Sort of like Delta force having issues with SEAL Team 6. Looks like there's some elitism going on within Canadian SpecOps

Vespa 150 TAP
They started being produced in the early 1950's and stopped being made around 1959. Yes, it is a Vespa scooter outfitted with a reinforced frame and a 75MM (3.0 in) recoilless rifle. This is a French design with an American Anti-tank weapon attachment. Around 800 of these made it to the Algerian War and got utilized. Cheap to produce and could even be parachuted to the front lines.

I wonder if this is where Looney Toons got the idea of a gun making a forward moving vehicle, go backwards instead.
