Kevin Smith ejected from flight

Kevin Smith says he's "way fat," but that shouldn't stop him from flying.

The director and actor says a pilot ejected him from a Southwest Airlines flight from Oakland to Burbank, Calif., saying he didn't fit properly in a single seat.

Smith raised a stink about the incident on his Twitter page Sunday, saying "I'm way fat, but I'm not there just yet," and "If you look like me, you may be ejected from Southwest Air."

After a storm of angry online comments from Smith and his fans, the airline issued an apology first from its own Twitter account and later in a statement on its Web site titled "Not So Silent Bob," a jovial jab at the Silent Bob character Smith plays in many of his films.

"We would like to echo our tweets and again offer our heartfelt apologies to you," the statement said.

The airline said it also accommodated Smith on a later flight, gave him a $100 voucher and apologized by phone.

Southwest Airlines

Oh god, I'm about the same size as him. I better stay away from airplanes!

Fuck, actually I don't think that I've been on one in 13 years anyway haha.

Do you have a buddy named Jay? ;)

I might fly again if they wouldn't act like Nazi Germany and relax some of the rules.

That's messed up! Airlines are getting so out of hand now and days! But hey he has enough cash to purchase another seat.

Still it's not right and the airline said they were wrong.

All airplanes should have oversized seats available for purchase.

More room and better comfort.

Smith insisted that he was still able to put both armrests down and buckle his seat belt, which is Southwest's standard.

Who knows what went on and honestly who really cares? So a fat guy got ejected from a flight. Is celebrity news this slow this week? I did notice they did not show a photo of Kevin Smith. I guess a no visual would be better to sympathize with him? Well here is what he looked like at Macworld Expo

So, if someone does not fit into a seat, What should the airlines do? They are allowed to have rules about the size of luggage, carry-on and checked luggage, but they can't make rules about the size of a person?

They are bound by weight and size restrictions. Planes are only so big. Seats have finite space. If you don't fit in the seat, you need to do something else. Buy two seats, travel by train if possible, I don't know.

I'm not trying to be a dick to those who are large. But this isn't anything personal. This is an airline adhering to the rules of physics. They can only fit so much weight onto a plane. They have only so many seats. Everyone needs to fit.

Also, I've been subject to sitting beside a morbidly obese person on a flight over the Atlantic. The first thing she did (before sitting down) was lift the arm rest because she couldn't fit. So she mashed against me and I was mashed against my arm rest because I didn't want to invade the seat of the person next to me. It was a wretched experience that I wish on no one. She didn't fit in the seat she bought. She should have bought two.

End of rant. Will, now's a great opportunity for you to  me.

No, unless they want to admit they discriminate. :hatsoff:

It isn't discrimination. It's about the safety of the flight getting to where it needs to go. There is a maximum weight allowed on a plane from the luggage to the very people who are flying on the plane. That is how a lot of plane crashes happen, because of going over the maximum weight limit, especially with little flights. So if one person needs ejected from a flight to ensure they are not 50-100+ pounds over the max limit, so be it. Flight delays are not uncommon, and the airline could be sensitive about the matter and discuss it in private, if the customer wants to raise a stink because they are overweight and because of that cannot fly on a plane, that is their temper.

This was in the article:

Southwest says it "Customer of Size" policy require travelers must be able to fit safely and comfortably in one seat or make other arrangements.

There are rules and regulations. What Kevin Smith went through, who knows, thing is he was ejected and in the end here we are. So obsessed with celebrities we report on a fat one getting ejected from a seat. I wonder what tomorrow will bring...

Kevin was in his seat with both armrests down and his seatbelt fastened without an extension.

If that's too fat then a lot of us are in trouble.

Unless you're willing to pay double the price for these "oversized seats" then they just aren't going to work.

Two fares = better than one.

But surely if they had allowed him on even though it went against the airline protocol, surely there'd be some thread around here bemoaning the fact that the "celebrity" got special treatment.

Must be a slow news day......

The guy is big, but not really big. I can't imagine they'd kick him off, when I've seen WAY bigger dudes sit on a plane...

WTF are those things he is wearing on his legs?
They look like a cross between pants and a really long pair of shorts....Shants perhaps?:dunno:

BTW....he REALLY got big and I sure as hell wouldnt want to be on a flight sitting next to him...if he farts, the planes going down!:D

i actually saw a bit on the news where he was talking about how he normally buys two seats for his own comfort but couldn't this time cuz the flight was so full but i agree with those who've said it must be a slow news day

While that makes me respect him a little more, it also points to the fact that he has basically acknowledged he needs two seats.
