Is the Adult Film Industry suffering because of all the free porn on the Internet?

It's a bit of a tough question really as you can expect many different answers. Some will say yes its hurting while others are benefitting greatly from the massive potential and reach the free tube sites have.

Big issue (imo) is that for years all went very well and people got lazy. People stopped innovating. Porn used to be this big online innovator, well let me tell you those years are long gone. A lot of people hurt right now are the ones who still do what they did 5 or 10 years ago. Times are changing, the internet is changing and so should you if you run a porn company.

A lot of the porn companies were right there on the right time and were lucky. Now that they need to actually work on their product they have no clue and blame everybody else. Sure it's tough, don't get me wrong but there is still a market out there for a quality product. People are still willing to pay if you offer them something great.

The whole cam issue Jaana is mentioning should not be an issue since cams are about interaction. Take out the interaction and you have just a video clip. The big shift we saw was from people wanting (paying) for paysites to now people looking (and paying) for the live cam experience. It's not for everybody but the good thing about cam shows is that you can not pirate them. You can not pirate an interaction.

For us (FreeOnes) it is also tough to compete with the tube sites. But do you hear me complain? Sure sometimes I do but fuck most of the times I focus on our product and try to make it better. In my opinion is that the only route to go.

Anyways, time to get back to work ;)
Wait, you work?
Wait, WAIT! You try to improve FO?
i buy DVDs. granted, im picky as fuck, but i do buy DVDs. if its something i want, i get it to own. in fact, i even got some for christmas and i expect some for my birthday too.
I VERY rarely buy porn. I'd love to, but I have a wife and a house and needs come before wants.
Yeah I get plenty of free porn through thehun... tube sites? Not so much.

I agree 100% with this.

In the past we buy VHS, then it was CD, DVD, now we download the stuff, sometimes we have to pay, others not.
I yhink we must look for more info to judge this situation

Another problem that porn faces is that I foresee is not just the illegal pirated porn that is free out there, and not just the stuff they themselves give out, but the people and couples out there that are independent and willing to put free or cheep stuff out there themselves either because they want to make a little cash on the side or they just like exhibitionism.

That factor isn't as bad as it could be yet, because most of the quality of it is pretty poor, but what happens when things like cameras and lighting systems get even cheaper, easier to use, and advanced enough where the gap between professionally made work and amateur work is closed, those people can more easily put things up on the Internet than before, and they face less hassle and regulations because it will be a pain in the ass for the government to go after them compared to going after a major porn producer? That goes even more so if they women that do it are just as attractive as the ones in the professional stuff.

Plus, with the way porn is going having something that is actually nice, sensual, non-circus act like, non-misogynistic, and more realistic might start appealing to the people porn has turned off since the 90s were over if not even before then.

Porn should have also gotten more mainstream and professional or at least should have tried it's best to do so and get more open widespread acceptance when it really took off on the Internet. Instead it just got dumber, more hardcore, and did everything in it's power to not do that. If it could have even accomplished a little bit of more open mainstream acceptance in this country not only would more revenue channels have been opened up like normal movies have now, and more advertizing been available that isn't as hurt by piracy, but I think the performers would be paid more and they would have less of a problem with the regulations and safety concerns. Of course what they did instead was kill the goose that laid the golden eggs for a quick buck.

I think differently than my colleagues about this. I don't think the adult industry is suffering from free porn really. All the free stuff out there produced by me and about me is out there because i leaked it: very few, in my case, but that's my choice and biz model. Look at the massive amount of free stuff out there and where it comes from and you'll see that mostly is leaked by their respective owners. Yeah there are exceptions and stealers of course, but i repeat myself: most of the free stuff out there has been leaked by their owners.

The porn industry is not suffering more than other industries: ppl got less money in their pockets, but this works also for restaurants, clothes, vacations and so on. Don't forget that for the increase in the amount of free porn available, there has been an equal or worse decrease in advertising: the idea is to monetize giving part of the production away for free versus protecting it and spending quids in advertising. It's a relatively new biz model which like any other biz models awards someone and penalizes others.

The industry, in my opinion, suffers (beyond this critical times for any industry) of lack of courage and of a generation of porn entrepeneurs and entrepeneuses who jumped in the train without possessing the requisites for the job. From lack of vocation to lack of business plans to lack of a customer-oriented mentality, many people are struggling or failing because they pertain to something else, but the porn industry. There are ppl in this industry, though, who do very very well and increase their income year after year and yet they are leaking their content or content that they are in is leaked, so there is definitely no connection between free porn and failing in porn, at whatever level you want.

Big companies definitely put their stuff out there for free but for many of us solo girls, people steal from us. Yeah, a little is good advertising and I do know for a fact that some guys who have seen my stolen scenes end up getting cam shows from me. But that's why my webmaster creates free clips and galleries for my affiliates, so people can get a taste of what they are getting before they join. So I have a huge problem with the amount of my stolen content out there.

It's true you can't pirate an interaction, but for a lot of guys the idea that it WAS a live interaction is enough for them to get off. There are plenty of tube sites dedicated to streaming recorded cam shows and plenty of guys on cam sites who get banned every day for being caught recording and uploading.

And some guys don't even care if it was live or not, they just want to see free porn.

So how do you expect us performers to eat?

I think if you look OVERALL its not hurting...still a billion dollar industry. But if you look at individual cases, looking at models, pornstars, camgirls etc....with everything getting capped, stolen, spread around the web...it can be hard to make a living sometimes. I'd be willing to venture that with porn being online nowadays, the majority of porn viewers don't actually contribute financially to this industry. Of course, I can only speak for myself being a lowly camgirl and all, but 98% of the people who view me on MFC don't actually EVER tip me, buy my content etc. And the general attitude I come across from men online is "its porn...I shouldn't HAVE to pay for it." A lot of guys either dont' like to think of our jobs as actual jobs, or they don't respect us enough to pay for it...and thats sad. Because if us girls all of a sudden stopped being paid for what we do, there wouldn't be porn out there - period.

So yeah. I dunno what this post was for...I don't really know how I feel. I can only speak for myself I guess.

I think an issue also with people in porn as apposed to something like the music industry, let alone the mainstream movie industry which isn't that hurt by piracy, is that the performers don't make that much in the first place. I have much more sympathy for somebody in porn that might lose half their revenue because of things like that than some musician that might still make 9 million dollars a year instead of 11 million because of stolen content or some major video game producer that still rakes in millions in revenue.

When somebody only makes a few thousand dollars here and there it's got to hurt a lot more to lose that little bit they have. I do think it hurts people in porn more disproportionally then other places where it happens.

I will say though that I also think piracy has become a very convenient scapegoat for all the industries problems. The majority of everything else that they have a problem with that they have did to themselves that piracy has done nothing to create they still blame it on. That's everything from poor business management, poor innovation, poor organization, poor professionalism, and just generally being dumb or producing horrible products of which there are plenty.

Like a lot of people say with other products that is still true in porn, a gigantic portion of those people that have pirated content probably wouldn't have bought it anyhow so it's not always accurate to say the industry is losing money from that. A lot of the stuff out there is so crappy that nobody would want it if it wasn't free. Still I think it hurts the porn industry more than most.

Don't know about the Adult Film Industry but I've certainly suffered because of all the free porn on the Internet, somedays I can barely get out of bed for work in the mornings

I was looking at DVD's in a local adult video store about three years ago peering at the new releases when a guy casually walks by me and says "Everything in here is on the internet", which made me think, yeah, this guy on his way to the plastic toy section is right, what the fuck am I doing here even looking at these DVD's.

Back in the 70's your option was to order 8mm loops from the back of magazines, then you could order expensive Beta and VHS tapes in the 80's and 90's. DVD's were an exciting innovation but it didn't take long for them to become a relic. Basically the old delivery system of porn is extinct, so every element of distribution is out of business. So is most of the old style of production of porn... with technology and some smarts, anyone can pretty much produce their own product. A great example is Janet Mason of http://www.janet-exposed.com/ who along with her husband started their own website about ten years ago. She basically made a name for herself as an amateur and made money from subscribers to her site... she became popular enough that the pro side of the business came calling and she went on to do plenty of pro work for a few years.

I think the money for performers is best if they can run their own site, thus control their content and rely on subscribers. Sandee Westgate is an example of a solid website of a model high in demand with a loyal subscriber base who does things on her own terms.

But even Janet Mason and Sandee Westgate lose money to piracy and file sharing. I think fans though should sometimes think twice about giving away product that their favourite adult performers put out. At some point the adult business won't be a lucrative enough gig for a lot of quality performers to get into. You often get what you pay for and adult entertainment is no different.

Basically the adult industry has to produce exciting, quality product at a price point that the masses don't mind paying. If I had new content that I felt was in demand, the first place I would release it on would be a pay-site that streams the content, I would then wait a month or two before I sell the content in DVD form and then in file form online... because once someone has a file of your content it is almost instantly available on ******* sites and file share forums. I know Playboy agressively goes after these filesharers legally but that just further makes their overhead go up in lawyers fees. And notice that Playboy and Penthouses are no longer a higher echelon of adult entertainment? They really don't attract high end models anymore because the money isn't there and if you're a fan now you get less of a quality product.

So stealing porn from the adult business has cost the industry but it also costs fans in the end because the quality of the product will also suffer.

I can tell you, as someone who works in the music industry, that illegal downloads have CERTAINLY hurt the industry.

Oh well, though, right? You get something you want for nothing, and fuck the people who worked to produce it.

A very fair distinction. Look at what NoiseTrade has done for music. It's fantastic, and it's all about free stuff. That kind of download is doing nothing but positive things for the industry.

I bow to Sabrina Deep's wisdom. It's constant.

But a lot of the free stuff IS stolen. Even from larger companies, I know for a fact that Score has people employed full time to search the web for stolen content.
