Insomnia?!?!

I've had issues with falling asleep and staying asleep since my college days....I go to the gym these days....cardio does wonders for making one tired...

Out of curiousity, kittykat, as in the wonderful lady I haven't seen for years, kittykat? From Australia?

Insomnia is a very serious medical problem and doctors never really understand how to treat the illness.

I was saddened by the passing of "THE KING" Elvis who was addicted to sleep and pain medications which caused Elvis to have toxic megacolon and died from the complication of all those medications. Let's move forward to 2006, and Eminem admitted his addiction to sleeping pill and willing to get professional help.

There are excellent advice from this thread but drdeath67's advice is most outstanding.

Dr.Death67 pointed out the most salient point in the cure of insomnia.

1. Take time off, not one or two weeks, but if you can take at least three months off. (It is difficult to take three months off to detox and relax at home !)

2. Relax, enjoy life with your loved one. Spend time under the sheet. Avoid any alcohol, drugs and cafferine and even sugar ! (yes, sugar can cause you to be hyperactive !)

3. Relax, reduce stress by not engaging with any external stimuli. Even if you work in the most stressful job such as police, army, in the ER, EMT personels, or shift work, try to think first before engage in a conversation with others.

4. Stay away from coffee if you work at night.

5. Try not to see a doctor (The only thing a doctor can do is to write you a prescription and you will be addicted to the pill and start to pop one after another)

6. If you have to take sleeping pill, or other depresants like alcohol or other drugs, try to take a "drug holiday" on the weekends. You may not be able to sleep until 3 or 4 or 5 a.m. but you may get 7 hours sleep and get up around noon.

7. Sleep in a very dark room without any noise, exercise and drink some hot milk and sleep with your girlfriend just like what Dr. Death67 described.

8. Even if you need the sleeping pill, try not to take more than prescribed, at most, one at bed time !

Good Luck !

I suffer from it as well. For those of you who are in the know and are familiar with my personal history and background, the factors of my insomnia vary due to mitigating circumstances.

On an average per night basis, when there are no undue stress factors, I manage to maintain maybe three to four hours of uninterrupted R.E.M. sleep. However, if I'm ill, stressed, worried, or in any similar condition, I typically go anywhere from one to three days while only actually sleeping maybe five hours or so out of that entire time.

As lovejoy posted above, Dr.Death's methods are of sound advice.

I think...well I know that all this is brought on by having way too much on our minds...thinking/worrying about too many things! I did the best to clear my mind of such things last night and I slept a total of 9 hours!

Insomnia may not always be caused by stress, too much in our mind,...thinking, worrying.

For example, I went to bed around 11:00 p.m. Saturday, but woke up around 3:25 a.m., "WIDE EYE OPEN", went back to sleep (or tried to go to sleep) but watched the clock at around 4:30 a.m. and then 5:30 a.m., finally went back to sleep at around 6 a.m. and woked up around 8:00 a.m.

Sometimes, it is due to change in work schedule during weekdays and weekends.

Although it is interesting to point out "DREAMS" occur during REM sleep, and many may take sleeping pills which bypasses REM sleep and have "NO DREAMS" !

It is interesting to point out if you do not have dreams during sleep, you may be addicted to long-term side-effects of sleeping pills !
