I make a mediocre living as a maintenance supervisor at a resort. Many times in the last few years I've thought about going back to construction to make far better money, but stayed here because this job allows me the flexibility of hours required to go to school and finish my engineering degree. Now I am glad I did. Winters are always tight here, but I was just talking to the office manager who told me that bookings are on par with previous years, so if people are still spending on weddings and vacations then I guess there has to still be hope.

I work @ a shipyard and we're selling boats like crazy, it's unbelievable. Last week two new mechanics we're hired and next week two new carpenters are starting. I've also had a nice pay raise because they're very satisfied with me. I'm really lucky to be doing se well in these times

I was browsing an international maritime website about a month ago and there was a fairly lengthy list of idle, for hire, contract for carry, ships from Korea (Hanjin) as China (COSCO - China Ocean Shipping Corp).

Apparently, the trickle down, rippling effect of the economy has effected the shipping of goods all around the world.

The small craft boating industry here is doing extremely poor, going belly up, in fact.
You must live in Monaco or some such principality :dunno:.

I was browsing an international maritime website about a month ago and there was a fairly lengthy list of idle, for hire, contract for carry, ships from Korea (Hanjin) as China (COSCO - China Ocean Shipping Corp).

FedEx just crashed a transport plane #80 carried parcels from GZ, China to Tokyo killing 2 American pilots.

The issue is only 1 kind of major businesses flourish these days: very low cost Walmart can flourish because people flock to price cutting stores in which Walmart also sells grocery (which is actually not cheap at all and very poor customer service).

This raw deal is hitting everyone but the rich and richer who are still getting million dollars pay-out and bonuses.

Is Obama doing anything? Hell No. I am speechless.

The shipyard I work @ builds pleasure yachts. I work in the office doing all sorts of administrative tasks but when it's really busy like @ the start of the season I sometimes also help out on the workfloor.

I've always wondered something about the sale of boats...

Let's say that someone buys a $300,000 boat. For a down payment, they give you $20,000 and plan on paying the rest in monthly installments. What would happen if that person took their boat, removed all tracking devices and just sailed away to never be heard of again? Like, why don't more people do that? Shit, I would. :1orglaugh

They can only take delivery of the boat after the last payment. If a customer wants to take a loan out on a boat or some kind of installment plan they have to go to the bank The way it works is that a customer pays the total amount in 4 payments. One @ the start of the build, the next one half way in, the third one 3 quarters into the build and the last one just before delivery (altho we've had customers who did it in 5 payments). The last payment also includes extra costs like when a customer decides they want to change something during the build wich wasn't in the contract.

i'm doing fairly well too. the hotel i work at is booked to capacity week in/week out. march break was busy as fuck too.

in fact, i'm doing so well, i'll probably be getting my first house this summer. woop woop.

houses are cheap as fuck in this city. i think it was actually ranked 1st for least expensive in the country.
