I had my first Alcoholic Beverage Today - HELP?!

Today was the first day I had a shot of alcohol.

I went to Rite Aid and bought the Red (Regular No Flavor Added) Stolichnaya went home and poured it straight from the bottle into my glass and started to drink ...

It tasted like absolute VERY bitter vinegar. My taste buds went like ewwwwwwwwwww and ugggggghheeeeeeeewwwwwweeee. But ... all my friends say vodka (and alcohol in general) is great. Am I doing something wrong? Am I supposed to mix it with something or what? If this is how most alcohol tastes then I'm OUT ...

HAHAHA dont buy the Zero Sugar range you goose!

Stolichnaya is awesome. I think taking shots of it is wasting it though. It's best property is its ability to not taint other things with alcohol flavor (compared to other vodka's). If you want to take shots, I'd recommend UV's lemonade flavor. You can drink that straight from the bottle, and it still tastes good. Scotch is another thing to drink straight. Some people do whiskey, but I don't like it.

Try pina coladas. They're tastey. I also like gin and tonic. Bloody Mary's do a good job of completely hiding alcohol taste, but you have to like tomato juice.

As for beer, good starter beers are Michelob Ultra and Honey Brown due to their relative mildness.

There's also things like Mike's Hard Lemonade and Smirnoff Ice.

In general, alcoholic beverages are an acquired taste. They take awhile to get used to. Mike's Hard Lemonade and pina coladas are exceptions.

are you talking to me?
mix-it with some orange or lemon juice 1/3 of of glass ice+vodka and 2/3 juice ;)

If you want to do shots, I would recommend scotch or whiskey. It tastes a lot better IMO. But if you're in the UK remember that ordering "whisky" will get you scotch, not whiskey.

Alcohol is most definitely an acquired taste. You're not doing anything wrong, it's just one of those things where you kind of have to convince your brain that you like something that it's telling you tastes like shit. After a while it won't be that bad.

With that said, doing shots off the bat is not a good place to start. Try mixing harsher alcoholic drinks with milder drinks. Pina Coladas are good, Long Island Ice Teas not so good. Like Dootiful said, a good place to start is with beer. Again, look for a lighter beer to start. American beers are notorious for how watered down they are, so Bud Light would be a good choice to start, just don't get stuck on it (I've pissed stuff with more alcoholic content than a Bud Light). Don't start with Guinness or Anchor Steam because you'll end up hating beer. Oh, and, no matter what anyone tells you, STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM 211 STEEL RESERVE!

Other than that, all I can suggest is that you experiment. Ask people who might be knowledgeable about different kinds of drinks what they consider good and bad, and try them out. Your opinion of what's good and what's not so good may differ from theirs (in my case, I refuse to drink Sierra Nevada because it tastes like flowers, but everyone else I know loves it), but at least it'll give you a good place to start.

How did it go with the girl and your association with the JW Kingdom Hall ?
That was you . . . right ?

Are you a free man ?

Is that what the liquor is all about ?

Moderate yourself now

I think taking a shot was a bad first move. You probably allowed it to sit in your mouth a bit and get the taste rather than just swallowing it down.

As someone mentioned, try a beer first just get used to it and then build up!

Hahhaha, hilarious.

Alcohol is never nice the first time you try it. And your friends are probably reffering to the effect of vodka being great, not the flavour or the act of drinking it.

Anybody who "shoots" Scotch should be...well, shot.

As far as vodka goes, and assuming you are of legal drinking age

Try these:

Cape Cod -- Basically 6:1 Cranberry Juice to Vodka. Put ice in a highball glass pour about 1 oz (1.5 for stronger) of vodka and top it off with cranberry juice.

007 -- Orange Juice, Stoli Orange Vodka, 7-up. Same ratio as above just hit it with a splash of 7-up. You can use any orange flavored vodka really.

Of course there is always the plain old Vodka Martini. I like 'em extra dirty...like my women.

Stoli in the red label bottle is their basic run-of-the-mill vodka. Stoli Gold (has a black label) is thier "premium" vodka and has been thru the distillation process a few ore times. The more times it is distilled, the smoother it will be. Smoother = less "burn."

Vodkas like Belvedere and Grey Goose are EXCELLENT triple distilled vodkas which can easily be drank "neat" meaning with nothing else. I will recommend that you leave the vodka bottle in the freezer and allow it chill -- it will thicken slightly like syrup but it will never freeze due to the alcohol content.

Lastly, alcohol is an aquired taste. Very few people actually "enjoy" their first taste of an alcoholic beverage, and in the US that is the reason why we have the poor excuses for beer like Miller, Bud, and Coors because many Americans did not like the stronger flavor of Pre-Prohibition lager beers and obviously prefer warmed-over, diluted horse urine. :D

Oh! Another thing about alcoholic beverages, please don't be forced into doing shots. Doing shots of whatever is a terrible way to waste a perfectly good drink. Anytime my roommates get tequila, brandy, or just about anything else, they have to do shots with it. For them, drinking is only about getting fucked up.

For me it's different. I was always taught that the point of drinking is to taste whatever it is that I'm drinking and to enjoy it. Doing shots doesn't let you enjoy anything because it just passes from glass to gullet with minimal contact with the taste buds. If I get something expensive, say Cazadores Reposado, I want to enjoy what I spent my money on, and not just throw it down the hatch. If I wanted to do that, it would make no difference if I'm drinking 75 year old scotch or shit water, they would both taste the same.

Well Im 22 and didn't drink until I was legal... i hated and still hate the taste of alcohol... im not much of a drinker but try smirnoff ices... sure you might get made fun of (my gf can handle hardl liquor and says I only drink "girly drinks") but its good... tastes like juice or soda with just a little punch to it

but beyond that i hate the taste of beer or most alcohols..... I do like this warm alcoholic (lots of alcohol) punch drink that the founding fathers used to drink... big history buff and looked it up one time.... its really good; forgetting the name right now though

Follow the shots with a chaser of a non-alcoholic drink...some people use fruit juice, some use soda, whatever is on hand. There's nothing to really improve the taste - if you hate the taste of alcohol, you'll still detect it and cringe...even in mixed drinks. It just takes time to get used to it...you have to suck it up and just drink it. If you learn to drink shots, the better off you'll be...you don't have to drink as many shots, and you get drunk more quickly.

A shot recipe that actually tastes good: butter shots + bailey's irish cream

what the fuck you lookin at?
Tequila is great for shots!

It'll kick your ass, but it's still great for shots!

I don't care for vodka myself.

hey,
Try some captain Morgan's spiced Rum mixed with Ginger Ale....it tastes exactly like A&W Cream Soda pop.

Or a Madori Sour...Madori Liquor mixed with sweet &sour mix with a splash of OJ.

To the Cape Cod listed above...I add Peach Schnapps...great taste.

You want shots...try an Oatmeal Cookie...1/2 oz. Jaegermeister with 1/2 oz. of Cinnamon Schnapps with 1/2 oz. of Irish Cream, and a 1/2 oz. of Butterscotch Schnapps...shake well strain into a chilled glass...enjoy!!!:glugglug::glugglug:
