Burger King To DNA Test Its Beef After Food Processor Used Horse Meat

Burger King will reportedly test its meat to make sure it is 100 percent beef after horse DNA was found in beef products from one of its food processors.

Diego Beamonte, Burger King’s vice president of global quality, told Bloomberg Businessweek that “details for DNA testing have not been worked out, and no timeline has been set for implementing the new procedures.”

Burger King addressed this topic after it was disclosed that Silvercrest Foods sold beef products containing horse meat to other retailers.

According to the company’s statement to PR Newsire, Burger King says it will test specifically for equine DNA.

Burger King told Businessweek that it dropped dealings with Silvercrest after learning that meat supplied by the distribution company contained horse meat. Burger King went on to say that product from Silvercrest was never sold in their stores.

“We will dedicate ourselves to determining what lessons can be learned and what additional measures, including DNA testing and enhanced traceability controls, can be taken to ensure that we continue to provide you with the quality products you expect from us,” Burger King stated in a press release to Newswire.

Burger King says they are committed to using suppliers that only produce 100 percent beef products.

What is wrong with horse meat?

Is it less valuable than the meat of cattle?

Americans rather not eat it.

Horse, cat, dog, gerbil, hamster, any animal we have as pets, work, or recreation.
We don't want to eat.

Now if they had buffalo meat that would be different.

This is a touchy subject, when you think about it. How do we decide which animals are okay to eat and which aren't?

As someone whose family owns horses, I'm inclined to be grossed out and horrified by this - yet I find myself also not giving a fuck. For some reason i'm a lot more offended by the idea of cat or dog meat than I am horse mat, buuuuut knowing how gentle horses are, it is a little sad.

<--- McDonald's obviously has a better idea of what a good burger should be made of. :D

Hell, the beef isn't "real" beef. So I bet the horse meat probably isn't real horse meat either.

To me, the problem is not that horse DNA was found into their meat but more that customers weren't warned that they used horse meat. I think a restaurant can sell any meat hey want, as long as they say what kind of meat it is and don't pretend it's beef if it is horse pork, or whatever.

What's the big deal, bitches? Obama has admitted to eating dog so everything else should be on the table.

Horse meat is actually delicious.

However, if they said they were serving you beef, and it wasn't beef, they should get financially kicked in the nuts.

What's the problem with allowing people to eat what they want, as long as it it is not cannibalism ?
Do you want government to regulate food ? Wouldn't it be a "big government" behavior ?

You mean the group that puts drugs on the market, because big pharmi, promises high paying positions to the people, when they loose their cushy gubment job, if they okay something that shouldn't be? That FDA?

Tommy's has buffalo chili and buffalo stew.

We have a chain around here called "Harry Buffalo", and they serve burgers and such made from bison, it's very good. Sometimes you can get it prepackaged at the grocery store, but unfortunately they cut it with to much pork fat, and it looses a little...still good though.

I'm with you 100% on this. You eat what you eat and I do the same. Respect that. I've got a friend that is a veg. When I go to his place I may get meat or not. I don't expect it and don't care if I get it. The food is always good. When he comes to my place, I make damned sure to give him more than celery and carrot sticks. If you eat horse then please point something out on the menu that doesn't have horse for me. We are all good.
