I hope you didn't COMPLAIN about that paperwork mistake, Chef!
If you're in jail, you must've done something wrong! It's as simple as that.
In a weird way, I DID do something wrong, but the paperwork mistake made it look like I did something wrong on an incorrect date. Even though I went to jail, it's actually a funny story.
LOOOOOONG story short...
When I got my DUI, my license was suspended for a year. Fast forward a year. The day before my license was to be reinstated (which was a Friday), I called the DMV and asked what I needed to do. I was informed that I needed to get a "release" from the court, allowing the DMV to reinstate my license. While I was on the phone, the girl at the DMV looked up my information and said that I never had a suspended license in their system. Obviously, I was confused.
I called the court and told them that the DMV needed a release form faxed over. I also mentioned that the DMV claimed that my license was never suspended. The lady on the phone at the court looked up my information and said that my license
was suspended. I was still confused, but she told me not to worry about it.
I go to the DMV the following morning (on Saturday) and get my license, no trouble. I go home and sit around for a while. I start to get a bit bored and figure, "HEY, I have my license again, maybe I'll go for a drive."
As I'm pulling out of my driveway, my neighbor who lives across the street (but one house over) started backing out of his driveway at the same time. My car was barely sticking into the road (I was driving forwards), but I stopped, that way he could back out and go before me. He obviously wasn't paying attention because he backed out of his driveway so fast that he ended up backing into the front of my car. To give you an idea of how hard he hit me, when he slammed into my car, he cracked my front axle.
Anyway, I wanted to file a police report for insurance purposes. He called the police and they sent an officer over to file a report. A police officer shows up, starts taking the report, blah blah blah. At one point, he asked for our licenses. Well, he decided to run our licenses to see if we had any warrants (I guess). So, guess what happens?
My license comes back as being SUSPENDED!!!
I didn't find this out until later, but the judge never suspended my license. He just told me that he did, but never actually had it processed. The lady at the court read my information wrong and thought that my court date had just passed, thinking that my license still needed to be suspended, as if I had
just been arrested for my DUI. I got to the DMV the following morning before she could enter the suspension into the system, so I was issued a new license. Between the time that I got home and the time that I was hit, she had submitted the suspension to the DMV, making it show up in all of the systems as "SUSPENDED".
I was arrested for driving with a suspended license and taken to jail. Obviously, I tried to argue it, but the officer wasn't listening. I even told him to look at the date of issue on my license (which was the SAME DAY) and he didn't believe my story.
The judge doesn't come to court on Saturdays, so I had to wait until he got back before I could have my appearance. Obviously, he's not going to be there on Sunday either. So, I sat in jail for those 2 days. Then, on Monday, the judge had too many cases too handle, so I had to wait until Tuesday to see him. Now I've been in jail for 3 days.
When he finally saw me on Tuesday, he immediately apologized and dismissed all charges because he knew it was a clerical error.
And to think, I'm moving BACK to this town. SIGH...
