The Porsche 911 Turns 50 - And Runs Better Than Ever

Have you ever experienced the thrill of driving a Porsche 911? Just thinking about getting behind the wheel of one gets me excited. And this year there is even more reason to get fired-up about the 911 – it’s turning 50!

For half a century, the iconic Porsche 911 has been a sports car benchmark revered by drivers worldwide. Born as a race car, the instantly recognizable and highly successful 911 is no ordinary automobile. More than 820,000 have been produced since the 911 was first unveiled by Porsche in 1963, and it is widely considered the identity of the company.

When I was about 10 my mother bought an Audi Fox. They were beimg sold at a Porsche dealership in town. While they were finalizing the sale for her I was looking at a 911 targa in utter amazement when the owner of the dealership asked me if I would like to go for a ride in it. One of my fondest memories.

But can you really call the 996 and onwards a 911! :stir::stir::stir::stir::stir:

I've had near-wet dreams of driving a Porsche 911 on the Nürburgring.

But no, I've never had the privilege of driving one IRL. I have driven a 50-year-old woman named Porsche though. badum-CHING.

A Porschephile.

I've heard the debate about the 993 and before vs. 996 and above before but you're above my pay grade with that. The first ones I ever saw race were 964 and 993 based. So I have a soft spot for the older ones. But the new ones are just so damn fast & sweet! BTW, do you know anything about being fast & sweet?

:notworking: Wait! What?!

I remember when I was around 12, asking my mom to go on the internet so I could visit the Porsche website to stare in awe at the 996. My taste in vehicles has grown, but I'll never forget the first time I saw a Porsche. We were coming back from a fair and we stopped at a convenient store across from a Porsche/VW/Audi dealership. It was dark, but the silhouette was unmistakable. Since then, I can't count the amount of sketches I made in notebooks of the side profile of a 911 throughout my school years.

^^^Yeah. Probably the two most famous and easily identifiable automotive silhouettes in history are the the Porsche 911 and the Jaguar E-type. Like you said, even in the dark, you can pick out a 911. And unlike Ferrari and Lamborghini street cars, Porsches are made to be raced and driven hard - well, the older ones anyway (the Panamera and the Cayenne are abominations, IMO).

.
A very good reason I'd consider those two cars in my top 5 most beautiful cars; recognizable and classic, yet timeless. Speaking of which, the Jag E-Type also turned 50 not too long ago.

Yes, just a couple of years ago. They did a little "birthday celebration" at a road course near me, but I couldn't go. Several iconic cars came out of that era. Great time for car guys.
