The only reason why Gretzky has all the records is when he played, no one was allowed to touch him. He never had any injuries or illnesses. Lemieux was harasses all the time, plus had cancer and a bad back and he still was a threat. That's the only reason why he never broke the records.
Agreed! I think Mario would've taken a lot of Gretzky's records had he not had health problems.

1: Gretzky
2: Gordy Howe
3: Mario Lemieux
4: Steve Yzerman
5: Bobby Orr
6: Brett Hull
7: Dominic Hasek
8: Mark Messier
9: Ray Bourke
10: " Rocket" Richard

What alot of people don't remember about Yzerman is that he was a scorer on the same level as Gretzky and Lemieux the first half of his career and then became the ultimate two way centerman and that's when the 'Wings started winning Cups.

Nice Red Wing choices! GO WINGS!! :glugglug:

The greatest Hockey players that I ever saw play in the NHL were

Wayne Gretzky
and
Mario Lemieux

The players that I can see in the NHL now, that are going to be the greatest someday

Sidney Crosby
and
Alex Ovetchkin

Yeah, but I remember Rechi playing with them at times. That power play unit was the shit when all those guys were out there with Desjardins and Recchi.

I remember Recchi being on the PP with LeClair at times but it was mostly after Lindros was shipped out and Primeau was named captain.

Come on!!!! Hockey greatest of all time..and NO mention of the true greats?!!?

No Plante?
No Roy?
No LaFleur?
No Orr?
No Fuhr?
No Tretiak?

People been sleeping on Coffey too. 3 of the top 7 single season goal records by defenseman are held by Coffey, including the single season record of goals by a defensemen w/48. That's A LOT of goals for a defenseman. Believe me, I played defense and that is an incredible feat. I don't think that record will ever be broken.

I personally think that Wayne Gretzky is most likely everyones first choice of GHPOAT.....but just wondering what everyone else thinks i personally liked Mike Bossy thought he was a great player....also Joe Sakic might be the best played to have never won a major award....ALSO GO SENS GO!!!!!

TheLegendKiller ......whose first

Sakic has won Major Junior MVP, Lady Byng, Hart, Conn Smythe and Person awards. Those are all major awards.

Would you consider Hasek one of the modern greats? I'm thinking that he could be, because his style seems to have, in many ways, revolutionized modern goaltending.

I don't know about Hasek. I don't think he did enough for me. He was a mind-boggling goaltender in the late 90's though. No one could score on him, I remember that. He was like a fucking wall.

Maybe not great in the sense of awards and Stanley cups and such, but I'm saying that his style changed the status quo, which makes him great.

bobby orr in my opinion wouldve been THE greatest but too many knee injuries cut short such a great career at the age of 30

Sakic has also won two cups. Hes going strong and still has 2 or 3 more years. He doesnt get enough credit. He has also captained the Canadian olympic team, look at the rest of the nhlers who did that and see the company hes in. {Gretzky,Lemieux to name a few}

Roys is the best goalie of all time he is responsible for butterfly and thats no disrespect to Brodeur whos easily one of the best and one of my favs

The single greatest player of all time is Mario Lemieux. Had it not been for his injuries, and him sticking around past his time due to monetary issues, he would have broken Gretzky's records.

Maybe this question can be asked a little differently...

For the best offensive player...Game 7, tied, 20 seconds to go. Whose stick do you want the puck on?

For the best defensive player...who do you want in between the answer to above and the net?

I don't know about that....Gretzky hit the game at the right time, always had great linemates, and played on some damn good teams.

true about gretzky .....notice how when he left edmonton the numbers started to suffer a bit even though he wasnt even 30 yet.....but gretzky is still one of the greats

I agree with all except the Shane Doan comment from page one. He's good but no where near when you talk about greatest of all time. I think one glaring oversight that I am noticeing is the lack of respect for Mark Messier, He won 2 cups without Gretzky, Gretzky never won any without him. Don't get me wrong Gretzky is #1 but Messier is definetly in the top 5.
