Greatest Comedian of all time

i liked galigher (spelling?) when i was younger.
i personally seen carrot top as the comedian's joke, but i seen him live in vegas and he was actually pretty funny, up untill he ran out of props that is......
dane cook has some funny shit too, and i love the way he delivers.....

Dennis Wolfberg - his comedy was absolutely brilliant. RIP :(

Saw Frankie Boyle recently - the "I would happily punch every one of you in the face" tour.

His TV stuff is milk-and-water compared to his live material.

He must be a contender.

Do you want to cover everything? stand up and comedy acting in movies & TV?

There's a lot of choices from the people that came up through Vaudeville & Burlesque, then into TV as it evolved:

Harold Lloyd
Buster Keaton
Marx Brothers, Groucho in particular
Three Stooges
Ritz Brothers
Milton Berle
Jackie Gleason
Lucy Ball
Phil Silvers
Sid Caesar
Jonathan Winters
Ernie Kovacs
Steve Allen
Jimmy Durante
Danny Kaye
Bob Hope
Carol Burnett
Johnny Carson
Shecky Greene
Danny Thomas
Jerry Lewis
Dean Martin

and later
Smothers Brothers
Flip Wilson
Richard Pryor
George Carlin
If you just want stand up in the last 20 years I'd say Gallagher.
Good list knowone.

Although you are missing Red Skelton for U.S. TV themed comedians. Bill Cosby, Joan Rivers, Alan King, Martin Mull, Jerry Stiller and Ann Meara too in the US market as well.

And Dudley Moore, and Peter Cook for U.K. based TV. Benny Hill is also in that category.

Comedic Troupes...

Monty Python
Laugh In
Second City Television
Saturday Night Live
The Kids In the Hall

As for sitcom comedians leading to films ...

Flip Wilson
Bill Murray
Dan Ackroydt
John Belushi
Steve Martin
John Candy
Chevy Chase
Rick Moranis
Dave Thomas
Jerry Steinfeld
Michael Richards
Rich Hall
The Smothers Brothers

Comedic writers and funny in their own right...

Mel Brooks
Buck Henry
Marty Feldman
Tim Conway
Harvey Korman

Then finally the standup comedians...

George Carlin
Richard Pryor
Robin Williams
Rodney Dangerfield
Eddie Murray

Bill Hicks.

Comedians like Dennis Leary and Lewis Black ripped him off like crazy. What worse, and never spoken of, is that he is solely responsible for what we think of Carlin's act today. Before you start throwing dates around, go back and look at Carlin's act before Hicks became a national act.

We all like to think of Carlin as the 7 Dirty Words guy, but that bit wasn't until 1988. Before that, he was joking about baseball and doing the Hippie Dippy Weatherman bit. Bill Hicks change comedy as much as Pryor did. Carlin just changed with the wind.

Not the greatest of all time, but Steve Carrell makes me laugh like hell!

As Michael Scott (wedding speech):

"Webster's Dictionary defines 'wedding' as 'the fusing of two metals with a hot torch.' Well you know something? I think you guys are two medals. Gold medals."

Though you can't consider him one of the greatest, the late Sam Kinison.

Then there's Steven Wright.

As for impersonators/impressionists, the living Rich Little and the late Fred Travalena.
