Greatest actor of the twentieth century

too bad hes picked some real shit movies throughout his career.

I still say that Patrick Stewart is up there as one of the best. But I dout that anyone can really decide on who is "the best", because we all have our favorites. Best we can do I think is produce a list of the top 10 or 20 best actors.

Henry Fonda for dead guys
Jeff Bridges for live guys.

I wish Jeff Bridges would pick his roles better, but overall a great actor!
White Squall, The Contender, The Big Lebowski were great and different roles. Fearless, Blown Away and Arlington Road were not great and quite boring for his skill level. Door in the Floor is his best in IMHO...

christopher walken
I think Walken is a great actor...the problem is, he's the same character in almost every movie he's in. Mel Gibson is also the same in every movie. IMO.

In my book, what makes a great actor is when the actor can totally submerge himself in a role.
I like when actors also change their appearance, too.

Gary Oldman is an incredible, underrated actor.

tom hanks no doubt...he was amazin in philadelphia, big, saving private ryan, the green mile and my favourite forest gump...his performances made those movies

Lee Marvin
Paul Newman
George Kennedy

The list is endless for the oldies, as for more current...

Bruce Willis
Tom Hanks
Mel Gibson

Neither list complete, but just a few off the top of my head.

Fearless I did really like. Based on a true story, it was a real sense of the ability to survive anything even into immortality while on the other hand Rosie Perez was consumed with death. K-Pax was also very good. Tucker was another good one. Seabiscuit I also enjoyed, although not his best.

I think he deserves the award, todays (and since mid 90s ?) mtv generation has laughed their abdominal muscles sore for days after seeing his movies.

Has Steve Buscemi been mentioned?

He's not close to beeing the best, but I still love that guy :D

i agree, probably the first actor i liked when i was a kid (seeing ace ventura, mask, etc). got famous for monkeying around, some how did it better than everyone else.

also great in his more serious roles, like eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.

(LORD) Laurence Olivier is number 1 in many experts eyes.
He could do Shakespear ,Feature Films (Movies) T.V, basically everything.
Learn more about him on Wikipedia

I am absolutely unable to pick one name to say "this is the greatest one"...

Some of my favourites are:

Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Sir Laurence Olivier, Sidney Poitier, Christopher Lee, Charles Bronson, Peter O'Toole, Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston...

... only few who have just entered my mind...
