I wish i had the time to watch all these older actors I hear about I just havent really gotten into any of the movies with Clark Gable, James Stewart, Humphery Bogart

Never rated either Gable or Bogart they were too 'me I'm the film and should be the be all and end all of it'.Other actors and actresses was to bow down to them and kiss there feet in their opinion.Stewart was good though.

If you want under-rated actors look no further than Alec Guinness and Errol Flynn

All great actors, one I forgot to mention is Jack Lemmon. Most known as a comedy actor but a great actor all the same.

My favourites (not the best)

1. James Stewart
2. Jack Nicholson
3. Robert Deniro
4. Gene Hackman
5. Marlon Brando
6. Jack Lemmon
7. Samuel L Jackson
8. Clint Eastwood
9. Martin Sheen
10. Robert Duvall
11. Christopher Walken
12. Tom Cruise
13. Dustin Hoffman
14. Joe Pesci
15. Morgan Freeman
16. Paul Newman
17. Tom Hanks
18. Bill Murray
19. James Gondalfini (Sopranos)
20. Ray Winstone

a very good list, but I would add in John Malkovich, Willem DaFoe and Kevin Spacey somewhere in there

Kevin Spacey maybe, not sure about Malkovich and Dafoe.

I love Platoon and Dafoe is very good never been a huge fan of the rest of his work.

Malkovich I just don't rate.

This is obviously very subjective but my personal all-time favorite is Steve McQueen. Lots of real-close seconds though.

So many great and fine actors.
Jimmy Stewart (Rear Window, Harvey, Vertigo and so many others)
Clint Eastwood (Spaghetti Westerns, et al)
Al Pacino (Scarface, Godfather 2)
Gene Hackman (French Connection, No Way Out and Character Actor Roles)
Paul Newman (The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Hud, Butch Cassidy, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof)
Steve McQueen (Bullitt, Cincinnati Kid, Thomas Crown Affair)
Sidney Portier (Blackboard Jungle, Heat of the Night, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner)
Jack Lemmon (The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, on and on and on)
Edward G. Robinson (Cincinnati Kid, Double Indeminty, Little Cesare)
Marlon Bardon (The Wild Ones, On The Waterfront, The Godfather)
Dustin Hoffman (Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, Little Big Man)
Frank Sinatra (From Here to Eternity)

Could Keep going here but I certainly cannot do justice to all the fine actors alive and dead that made Hollywood the place it is today. Too bad so much special effects have impacted are viewing taste and soon actors will become a thing of the past as many aspects of film making is computerize. Movies are not made for any more for the 50+ generation (Cinderella Man, great movie, box office flop) as more hip hop artist are being given "green lights" to draw younger movie goers. Ice Cube, Queen Lativa, Ludicrous, 50 cent, Mos Def, Bow Wow, Tyrese Gibson et al. These entertainers are certainly talented and will continue to produce money manking venues, but I have yet to see some truly great acting from up and coming stars with the exception of Terrance Howard (Hustle and Flow, Crash, Four Brothers) Paul Giamatti (Confidence, Sideways, Cinderalla Man) Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Crash, forget Ocean's)Matt Dillon (Crash), Jaime Fox (Collateral, Ray).

What you are going to see more of these actors are voice's for animation and documentaries. Morgan Freeman, March of the Penguins and auto commercials. Eddie Murphy and others.

Currently I think the best actors right now are Crowe, Depp, Giamatti, Macy, Foxx, Cheadle, Penn, Freeman, Washington, Bacon and Eastwood.

I apologize for the wordy reply, but I love movies and I see too much shit out their (except porn) to take our money for a one time high.

Sorry to say but alot of you are giving these actors who did good in 1 or 2 movies too much credit. Yeah Tim Robbins was great in Shawshank, but his name shouldnt be on anybodys list for the best actor in the 20th century.

Here is my little list:
Robert DeNiro
Al Pacino
Marlon Brando
Jack Nicholson
Tom Cruise

Honorable Mentions:
Clint Eastwood
Sidney Poiter
Johnny Depp
Brad Pitt
Matt Damon
Joe Pesci

Underated:
Alec Guinness
Peter Sellers
Don Cheadle

Well tough cookies, he's on my list. And damn well deserves to be there to.

Geez Harley, just slit my throat why don't ya
just kidding, I don't have a problem with anyones list, I'm just saying that I think some people here are naming their favorite actors, instead of thinking of the greatest actor. Even though sometimes they go hand in hand. Steve Mcqueen and Charlie Chaplin are kinda iffy picks though lol

But thats it. You can't have, "The Greatest Actor" as some of these guys didn't even know each other, most did different work, and the qualifiactions for greatest actor vary from person to person:2 cents:

Sorry but how can you call Steve McQueen iffy. The man stole scenes when he was in the back ground.Ask Yul Brynner,he hated him for it.In Magnificent Seven he kept telling the director to tell Steve to stop doing the things in the back ground because he was steeling scenes.

I think that Patrick Stewart deserves some mention as one of the top actors. Not just because of his work on Star Trek. If anyone has had the opertunity to see his other stuff, espeacialy his work on the stage, I dout you could disagree that he is one top notch actor.

Hmmm, judging by the replies in this thread I think "Greatest AMERICAN actor of the 20th century" would be a more appropriate title. What about Alain Delon? Marcello Mastroianni? Belmondo? Well, at least a couple of Brits were mentioned.

marlon brando contributed the most, defining a generation of actors and followers, helping usher in method acting, which is now probably the dominant technique. so he's my vote for greatest actor

most talented actor is a different story. for that i pick gary oldman

I've always regarded Clint Eastwood as my favourite actor..
but that is more to do with his on screen image than acting ability.
I guess if it is just about an actor's 'ability', I would probably go for Jack Nicholson.

Honourable mention to Gene Hackman.
