Greatest actor of the twentieth century

Loads of greats but who is the greatest?

Loads of greats to consider - Cary Grant, Humprey Bogart, James Stewart, Marlon Brando, Spencer Tracy, Paul Newman, Robert Deniro, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Christopher Walken.

Even some modern great actors - Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe, Samuel L Jackson, Kevin Spacey.

That is really tough, I like Bogart a lot but he did a lot of action so not real versitile. A few that leap out at me are as follows and I am basing this on how many different roles they were successful in playing...Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Robert DeNiro, Jimmy Stewart, Marlon Brando and Bogart. My personal favorite is Nicholson hands down. He rocks. After Forrest Gump and Philidelphia I had a new respect for Tom Hanks.

One's I always love watching - Nicholson, De Niro, Hackman, Freeman, Duvall, Eastwood, Walken, L Jackson.

Though the best for me is James Stewart, just an amazing actor. His performance in Harvey was just first rate class.

I'd have to agree with pretty much everyone mentioned so far in this thread, but I think there are a few brilliant actors missing (I presume we're excluding actresses because of the opening post, even though many women now use the term "actor" and also that this thread is about English-speaking actors only). Here are some more of my faves (in addition to most already mentioned above): Harrison Ford, Denzel Washington, Dustin Hoffman, Harvey Keitel, Ben Kingsley, Michael Douglas, William H. Macy, Nicolas Cage, Paul Newman, John Travolta, Sean Penn, Michael Caine, Sidney Poiter, Alan Rickman, George C. Scott, John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Gary Oldman. Very intense and talented actors!!! Sorry - I can't pick ONE greatest... ;) :hatsoff:

All great actors, one I forgot to mention is Jack Lemmon. Most known as a comedy actor but a great actor all the same.

My favourites (not the best)

1. James Stewart
2. Jack Nicholson
3. Robert Deniro
4. Gene Hackman
5. Marlon Brando
6. Jack Lemmon
7. Samuel L Jackson
8. Clint Eastwood
9. Martin Sheen
10. Robert Duvall
11. Christopher Walken
12. Tom Cruise
13. Dustin Hoffman
14. Joe Pesci
15. Morgan Freeman
16. Paul Newman
17. Tom Hanks
18. Bill Murray
19. James Gondalfini (Sopranos)
20. Ray Winstone

Bogart and Eastwood. I would kill to see them in a movie together.

Bond, James Bond. THE 007, Sean Connery.
My pick for actress is Michelle Yeoh, IMO the best Bond girl ever.

I think the greatest is a toss up between Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson or Tom Cruise.

Big bump here but over the last week I've have seen two James Cagney films, absolute top notch actor.

Greatest - Sir Charles Chaplin.
Favourite - Sir Charles Chaplin,Sylvester Stallone,Robert De Niro.

Rocky was the last film that Charlie saw but his health had deteriated to the extent that he had to turn down Sly's offer to come and visit him in Switzerland.

Easy this one Steve McQueen. This man was that good a actor he hated saying lines. It was quite well known that he take a part then start to dismantle the script.Like if there was a part where he'd have to say yes he'd ask if he could replace it with a nod.Even when other people was doing their scene and he was in the back ground he could steal the scene.

Best under-rated acting in a Movie---Tim Robbins---Shawshank Redemption...
