I thought of another one. FF VII. Overrated and people's love it just makes me hate it.
I think it was a great game. I think it's just one of those things that looks worse with time as better games in a technical sense come out and people loose the experience and awe from when they first saw it. Back in the 90s I can see why people thought it was great, and I can see from a view that maintains perspective why people list it as one of the greatest games ever.
What I would like to know is why after that it seems Squaresoft pretty much quit making any more great games. At one time Square was almost unquestionably the man when came to RPGs and a lot of video games in general, especially the RPGs that were imported to the US. They made game after game that are among the greatest video games of all time. Then they made FFVII which is continually listed among the greatest games of all time and some list it at the top. After that...it's like it went down hill. Even the Final Fantasy games made after that seriously disappointed. Now the Final Fantasy brand is a shell of what it used to be.
Time seems to be repeating itself. After Squaresoft lost it's place at the time it seemed Bioware took over and created great games. Now however it seems like they are also starting to fall off. I don't see any great RPG makers out there about to come out, and I don't really consider any MMO as a real RPG type of thing rather it's more mindless button pushing and time wasting while making a character more powerful.
