(Former) Racist Bully Decides It's Time to Apologize

I call BS. He's slowly dying and want's to be forgiven @ the last moment to get into heaven. Saying sorry doesn't make up for a lifetime of hatred and violence.

I just had to peek to see who it was as my curiosity, once again, got got the best of me :D barbaric

He's all yours, democratics !:rofl::lovecoupl

Huh??? That has absolutely nothing to do with what I posted.

:confused::confused::lame::bs:

I guess he could be sincere, a lot of people at the end of their lives think back over what they have done in and regret it. But, on the other hand as Boothbabe points out these could be empty appologies in order to get him sime forgiveness from up on high.

Who knows :dunno: The fact that it's news worthy is a little bit surprising also.

Apology is one thing. Repentance is quite another matter all together.

If he is truly sincere, I'm glad he re-discovered his conscience.

It doesn't "make up for it" ...

No, it doesn't "make up for it," but it does go a long way towards ensuring that people can change.

If there is one thing constant to spirituality, it's that one can change for the better. It does not erase the past. But it does ensure that people won't keep doing it because they fear there's no going back.

Someone might in jail, paying a price, etc..., but they can change. If it wasn't for some people who did some really bad things earlier in their life, we'd have a lot less heros and champions for causes.

I mean, have you ever seen the drive of someone who was wrong and corrected themselves? Sometimes, they are the greatest allies, especially when they can help others, who were like them before, see the error of their ways.

Truth.

of course, if you live a just and moral atheistic life you are going to hell, but if you are a total shithead for 90 years who recants thier sins on thier deathbed, then you are golden to get into heaven.

Well, if there is a heaven.

Older people always reflect upon their lives(irrespective of religion) & regret things that they have 'done' or 'didn't do' when they were younger. It is Human nature to do that & we all shall have regrets some day; just Keep living.

The reason it is newsworthy is because the man he beat was a famed Civil Rights Leader & now a well respected sitting U.S. Congressman-John Lewis.

If Rep. John Lewis can so graciously forgive the man then I have no problem neither. Saw this on CNN & it was a fascinating story.

What's wrong with him doing this? Why can he not be sincere in his apology? I live in SC, and used to live in the town he's in, and am glad that people are trying to change the perception of our great state.

whether or not his life was good or bad, the fact for me is this: i'd like to believe anyone is capable of changing at any moment. given right circumstance and mind i believe we can change who we are at will. now the problem is that if someone does it right before they die we never get to see the empirical proof of their change...which makes one understandably skeptical. maybe he should go on the mtv show bully beatdown :D (p.s. i, in general, despise mtv but this is a fun show, ex-bullies vs ufc fighters...awesome).

Better late the never,hopefully his new found publicity will help him to educate others about the dangers of blatant ignorance.
I commend him for being so open about it, if he's truly sorry I hope this helps him with his family who had to deal with him for so long.

This.....God said all you gotta do is ask for his forgiveness and he'll give it to you. You could murder a 100 people and ask for his forgiveness in the end and make it into heaven, but that only if you truely belive and really want it. God know if you're trying to play him to get into heaven.

A lot of argumentative responses ...

If you really think someone can just repent their sins away overnight, then I'm sorry, you're missing my point. It's not about people being able to be totally selfish and even evil all their lives and then "change" all-of-the-sudden. That rarely happens. Why? Because it's completely in their blood, and they can't.

The posts I see here are why most people "just don't get" the whole concept of "spirituality." It's not about seeking someone else for your forgiveness, or somehow trying to look like you've changed. It's about really changing. And it takes years, decades, sometimes a lifetime! That's the reality.

Sometimes it takes an event, or just wisdom over time, to change. But it happens. A lot of older people repent for what they've done in their youth. But it doesn't happen overnight. And a lot of people don't repent and pay a lot of lip service.

If he's sincere, he is absolved of his past transgressions in my opinion. Life is change and if he has truly changed then it's a good thing. Racism sucks....the domain of the ignorant and fearful.

Both you and Boothbabe make a great point,but what is the point if you don't mean it.Personally I don't see him being sincere he is a dying man he this is his last efford to get to Heaven

It's impossible for me to know what's in his heart or why he is really doing this. I just hope he has found some truth and peace. Finding it and the lessons learned from it often come the hard way.

It is better than not saying sorry at all.

No-one truly is sorry with complete altruism. There is always that bit of selfish gain. It is human nature. To err is human, to forgive, Divine.

Who knows whether the man asked for forgiveness before now?
