Former British prime minister Baroness Thatcher dies at the age of 87 following a stroke

Maybe it's just my perception, but it has seemed from my time on the internet and reading what UK people have wrote during that time that she gets a little more disliked as each year goes on. Maybe that's just something anecdotal or some form of selection bias from places I have visited, but I wonder how true it is. I'm sure people over there would have a better feel for the situation than I do. It would be especially notable since a lot of people disliked her back when she was still in office.

Interesting that she also gets compared to Reagan. I also wonder if like him if it matters that the full negative impact of the economic policies created didn't fully show until decades latter, even if they also had very bad aspects at the time they were created also. In the US they can be felt, and I think it's one of the bigger reasons the US is so screwed economically today.

I'm not going to criticize anyone because I pretty much wept for joy when Jackie Chan died..........I mean Kim Il Jong. Same thing for those cocksuckers, Ted Kennedy and Huge Chaves.

She thoroughly fucked over hundreds of thousands working class Britons, but for all of her pure fuckery, I loved that woman.

She didn't bend to social convention and stuck to her principles. She took over when there was a worldwide recession and unemployment went from %13 to under %7. She helped Ronald Reagan bankrupt the USSR. She was elected three times to lead a political body of men who regularly mocked her for simply being a woman.

She defined her political ideology perfectly, "The State is your servant, not your master." (Something that current leaders need to be reminded of again and again.)

She managed to raise twins — as she gained substantial political power — and was regularly home "in time to do the washing up."

She was one of only a few conservatives to support the decriminalization of homosexuality in the U.K. in 1966.

Those things, plus many others make her one hell of a better feminist role model than "Cankles" Clinton or Obama's wife, Dr. Zira.

I'll miss her and to those of you who don't........you're entitled to your petty victory today.

Rest in peace, Baroness.

Re: Former UK Prime Minister (1979-1990) Margaret Thatcher is dead

The best thing to happen to Britain in politics last century.
She took us from a broken declining state back to world leadership.
When she took over in 1979 after two decades of flip flop politics, the country was in a mess and declining fast. The unions were running (and ruining) industry long before Mrs. T got anywhere near them.
You cannot have industry when the workers (or unions) want more and more for doing less and less.
We got our pride back and wrenched the country back from the unions.

By no means did she get everything right, but what she left behind was a country much stronger and more able to withstand the economic disaster that the last Labour government left behind.

Did Mrs T shut down the mines? Only with the implicit help of the unions, who went on strike for over a year to keep them open longer, only to ensure that they all closed sooner. Talk about shooting yourself in the Foot.

not true, unemployment reached record levels during her premiership, peaking at close to 12% in 1984, highest levels in over 50 years. You're correct that they dropped to 7% at the end of her third term but thats still similar unemployment figures to what we are seeing now in the UK. Poverty also hit record levels at the end of the 1980's and is also getting dangerously close to that figure now.

and whilst she was one of the few to speak up for the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the 60s, her government then passed Section 28 of the Local Government Act in 1986 which stated that local authorities: "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" so she was hardly a gay rights champion.

as for her being a femist role model, she once said on feminism: "Feminists hates me dont they? And I dont blame them, for I hate feminism. It's poison." so once again incorrect.

you rightly pointed out that everyone is entitled to their opinion but what annoys me the most right now about the coverage of her death is that the media reports that she divided so much opinion and many are rejoicing at her death, but they dont go on to say why people feel like this. If the coverage of her was a little more impartial and pointed out her mistakes as well as the good things she did then people would be able to make a more informed judgement on her time as prime minister.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Wow, I'm gonna be honest, I'm pretty surprised by some of these comments and the people that have posted them. I guess respect for the dead is something that's lost on most people these days. Oh and where would the UK be now if she had not come along....probably under the complete control of the trade union crooks....

Best wishes to probably one of the strongest women to have ever lived.....

Well what did you expect?!?! England has been fucking Ireland, and Scotland for CENTURIES. You can't really expect people to have respect for someone that was part of that. It would be like suggesting Dick Cheney and George Bush be carved into Mt. Rushmore. Fucking England's government has been rotten to those countries...the only reason the U.S. hasn't said shit to them, is because they're allies....because WE basically have an evil government. Birds of a feather.

WE basically have an evil government. Birds of a feather.
Wasn't the 2nd amendment maid to prevent you from that ? Wasn't it to allow people to get rid of evil governments ?
So why are you still here, grab your guns and get those bastards out !

I know that a lot of people dislike Mrs T, but she stuck to her convictions and was never caught out in any sleaze or cover up. There are not many politicians that you can say that about.

She was good for the country - not just England, but the whole of the UK. Industry and mining were devastated not just by her, but by the intractable stance of the unions at the time. Do you think that it was just the workers that suffered when factories and mines were closed? No, of course not, there were a whole lot of office staff, white collar workers that also lost jobs at the same time. To say Mrs T was evil is as closed minded as saying that the unions are evil.

This whole idea that Scotland, Wales and Ireland have been screwed over by England is ludicrous. How many English members are there in the Welsh, Scottish or Irish Parliaments? Zero is the answer, none whatsoever. Scotland even has it's own legislation that England has no say in at all. On the other hand, Westminster is a UK parliament, not an English one, so the Scotts, Welsh and Irish all have a say in the laws in England. At the last election, the number of seats by country were as follows: England 533, Wales 40, Scotland 52, NI 16.

If the mines were so important, then why did the following labour government not reopen them? The simple answer is that they cost too much.

Mrs T became far more unpopular in her final term than during the mine closures due to the Poll Tax. The lady was not for turning, and that one policy is what ended her premiership.
Don't forget, she won 3 elections. Two by landslide. She was not as unpopular when she was in office as she is now made out to be.

Just as a matter of interest, her governments were elected with over 41% of the vote in all cases with turnouts between 72 and 77%
Only Tony Blair did better in 1997 with 43.2% of a turnout of 71% (his final election gave him just 35.2% from a 61% turnout - who looks more unpopular?)

As it happens Scotland has been making money from England for some time.
Now that I'm done playing devil's advocate I'd like to point out that England has been royally fucking Scotland for centuries, using the Scots to dominate the Indians among other conquests (two thirds of the world - more than any other countries empire ever - suck it yanks! :D /blatant trolling), so muffdiver has a good point. Even if he is a fucking jock

Was Jaguar doing well? Yes. Did we sell her to the yanks? Yes! Was it a smart move? No!
She sold off British manufacturing. Part of the current problem with our economy is a lack of manufacturing (unless you think it's smart to buy everything from the chinese.

People love her because she "won" the Falklands (I'm sure she was right there on the front line yomping with the marines  ) this makes about as much sense as saying that Stalin won The Great Patriotic War.

As it happens, you know those Vulcan aircraft that made bombing runs against the Argies? They'd been shut down. Reactivated for that mission alone, then left to rot. Since then Britain has had NO strategic bomber (which is just bloody stupid; know how B52s took off from Britain to hit Iraq? Vulcans should have been flying from our shores to hit Iraqi and Afghan targets.

No scandal there as such - Keeping Britain's sorely declining manufacturing sector going.
The equipment was Non lethal military equipment only (stretching the definition with tank spares, but no weapons).
She still was not caught in sleaze or cover up.

Of course.

I still believe that a lot of the ills brought upon the "workers" at the time were due to the unions rather than the bosses/governments of the time - this runs back to the early 60's before being brought to an abrupt halt in the 80's.
I fully believe in fair pay and conditions, but the unions of the time went far beyond that.

So... Do we have fair pay and conditions for workers now?

Why did you put "workers" in quotation marks?

So... Have corporations gone far beyond a fair shake for themselves?
