Film4's 50 Films to See Before You Die

Definately see City of God (Cidade de Deus). They got that one right. It was at number 3 on the list. Also, Boyz N the Hood, Trainspotting, Pulp Fiction, Donnie Darko and Scarface were rightly on the list. But I don't understand why they didn't include The Godfather, Goodfellas, American History X and The Shining.

Ah, American History X! Another great choice, and another from my collection. I was also thinking Memento as well.

How about "Dr. Shivago" or however you spell it? How about "King Kong", both the original and the latest one? And for you romantics in here, how about "Titanic"? Though I must admit that the list was pretty well balanced, a bit heavy on the drama side, but included some action and comedy too, not to mention weird stuff like "Pink Flamingos" and "2001: A Space Idiocy"

persona non grata
Some strange choises there. Mulholland Drive is on the list but not Blue Velvet, Raising Arizona but not Fargo, Fanny and Alexander but not The 7th Seal. Pleasant surprises on the list are Dawn of the Dead and Heavenly Creatures.

i don't know if it was mentioned yet, but RESEVOIR DOGS is a must see movie. the scene where mr. black cuts off the cops ear is BEAUTIFUL. if i'm not watching this movie (or some other sick flick by QT) i'm here at FREEONES "STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU"

That list is mostly a joke i mean only film i would consider in my top 50 is Terminator 2!! Wheres the good old 80's/90's style action movies?

It doesn't mean a whole lot. Everyone here can come up with their list of 50 best films. I saw about 4 or 5 on that list I liked. The number of excellent films that didn't make it showed how personally biased it was.

The other thing to consider, is that this isn't a "best 50 movies of all time" list, but, rather, a "50 films everyone should see before they die" list. If the criteria they used, and an explaination of why people should see these particular movies before they died was included, rather than just the list, it might make more sense. I can understand someone saying you should see a certain movie because it's a great feel-good movie, or because it's a laugh-a-minute movie despite the fact there are technically "better" movies out there.

how about SHREK?
it teaches us all to accept people as they are no matter how they look.
life is about having a good time while you're here.
we all would love to be married to a famous actress, singer, or porn star, but some of us have found love in that ogre we lay next to every night.
i know its just a computer animated cartoon but its a very touching and real story.-----------------------i give it two thumbs up. anyone planning on committing suicide should take an hour and a half to watch this movie before they do themself in.
:sunny:

I liked Fight Club too. I rated it I think a 9 or 10 on IMDB. I like some of the Miyazaki animations quite a bit also.

No Order, This Would Be My Top 5:
The Godfather Trilogy
Scarface
Carlito's Way
Man On Fire
Blow

I have seen 28 of those movies and there are at least 10 form my list I could have done without....

A rather poor selection in by books.

The list is, in fact, 50 films you should see before you die... significant difference from the 50 greatest films.

I think one of the films should be "Plan 9 From Outer Space"... the imfamous Ed Wood movie that is generally considered the worst feature film ever.

Basically I think people should seek early films by great directors... "Dr Strangelove" by Stanley Kubrick comes to mind. "Mean Streets" by Martin Scorcese is another... not his best film but certainly laid the groundwork for "Raging Bull", "Goodfellas" and "Casino".

George Lucas obviously cashed in with the "Star Wars" franchise... but a must see movie of his is "Amercan Graffiti" which really showcases what an excellent storyteller Lucas was without the aid of special effects.

If I could pick one Spielberg film it would likely be "Jaws"... cleverly crafted film, it was the interplay between the lead characters that made the movie, not some dopey mechanical shark.

Other must see criteria should include awesome performances by great actors that turned otherwise mundane movies into classics. Jack Nicholson certainly has that ability and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" might be the best example.

How about Al Pacino in "Scarface"? To me, Tony Montana is a far more memorable character than Michael Corleone... a tribute to Pacino making "Scarface" a must watch movie out of something that could have been just another run of the mill crime story.

Have to include Dennis Hopper in the performance by an actor category too... Frank Booth in "Blue Velvet" was one of the most terrifying on screen presences ever... I alos got a kick out his performance in "Rivers Edge" as well.

So, I can see where there is a difference between "must see" movies versus a greatest movies of all time list. Most avid film buffs love variety, great performances and "dare to be different" directing. Some of the best films are ones you never suspected you would enjoy.

I think that a wise man already made that exact statement in this thread:

You did elaborate on it much more eloquently, however.;)

om3ga

It's good to be the king...
32 Seen

While I'm glad Princess Mononoke made the list, it's criminal to omit Akira....

I thought the show should've been called 50 Films (that Film4 have) to See Before You Die......:D
