Re: Favorite US Sport -- Sexual Gossip?

You forgot to ADD Americas Favorite and Oldest, which would be SEX! :glugglug:
Or would that be "Sexual Gossip"?
Seems to me that it seems to be far more than sex itself!
Who is doing what? Where? And with whom?
If only we Americans were more mature, we might actually have more sex and far less sexual gossip!

There's no more proof of that then what people say about who you are with.
I stopped caring by mid-high school and disovered I didn't like the women I had been with and started dating the women I really loved.
And I found my own sexual desire (not just "how much I was getting") skyrocketed, regardless of whether or not my friends approved or disapproved publicly.

Because in the end, what men like personally is not always what they say publicly, or what the US media approves of.
So I'd say it's Sexual Gossip well before sex itself. ;)
Most Americans don't have nearly as much sex as our media suggests.

This 'old fart' agrees.

And will go further and say "American society and media in general don't peddle 'sex' as much as they peddle 'titillation'."

I grew up with a very different "attitude" towards sex, alcohol, drugs, gambling and other "vices". Living each moment as if it would be your last tends to colour ones judgement somewhat.

Needless to say, my views on such things till this day clashes with those adults of my parents generation and indeed - many adults from my own generation and the generation following mine. We consider ourselves to be a 'liberal, tolerant' society but frankly, I don't think we really, truly understand what 'liberalism'* means.

cheers,

* : And I don't mean that snarky, political "liberal Vs conservative" bullshit.

The sad thing is that it's rather childish titillation -- it's not even remotely sexy 99% of the time, and "erotic" is very foreign to 99% of American shows. It's more innuendo and insult than actual, engaging romance.

In reality, I'd rather have little sex, alcohol, drugs, gambling and other vices on our TV than the rather childish ones we have now. I don't know who to blame more, the American media, or the non-sense the FCC allows. It's insulting in any case.

Yes, the term "liberal" has morphed into a variant of "socialism," as is no longer what we'd now call "libertarism" today.

Yes, I know.

Re: Favorite US Sport -- Sexual Gossip?

Sorry I didn't get back sooner!

I actually like your description of it being an "insult" :) I really do! I think it somewhat describes it perfectly!

In reality, I'd rather have little sex, alcohol, drugs, gambling and other vices on our TV than the rather childish ones we have now.
Sex, alcohol, gambling etc. = vice? Why Professor! I'm shocked! :)

I'd have never imagined you to be a proponent of this 'public vices' scheme!

I don't know who to blame more, the American media, or the non-sense the FCC allows. It's insulting in any case.
Sad but true :( Truly insulting in either case. And it's compounded by the fact that the vast majority of the population that seem to think that the status-quo is "A-Ok and good to go"! I think I was watching some kind of "selection" process for some flunky to be "anointed" the new chairman of the FCC yesterday (I could be mistaken). Some of the answers he gave were truly frightening! I'm becoming more and more convinced that the more our citizens remain apathetic and abject to the workings of government (C-Span) and ignorant of our roots and laws (The Constitution) - the harder the management of our current situation shall become.

After all - you cannot defend what you do not know...

Yes, I know.
I knew you knew that Prof :)

I was referring that to the other readers of this board. I was merely using your post as an example/helpful-starting-point-to-my-argument

I know several Brits who get into American Football. It's an awesome game of strategy that has involved over the years.

Just a decade ago, they were talking about how the running game was going away. That was due to the pressure defenses and the switch to the more west coast, quick pass offenses.

But then came the cover 2 defenses. So now, defenders aren't putting up as much pressure, fewer blitzes can deal with both the passer and the running back, so rushing is up yet again.

Some people watch American football for the big plays. But some of us really get into the formations, how the offensive line pulls and traps, how the defensive stints, etc...

I've always said the most difficult game to play was hockey -- both physically and mentally. And there are plenty of sports more aerobic than American football, and in the professional arena, sometimes sizes does seem to dominate at times.

But I really get into American college football, with a lesser but still significant love for the professional game. Watching all the action on the field of all 11 players on the field -- as they take positions, as they go through the pre-snap motions, fakes, audibles, etc... and then finally as the play begins and unfolds.

Just nothing like it.
