He's somebody that I always though made alright somewhat entertaining movies, but I never though his stuff was great. There is a lot worse out there though.

I'm also one of those people that think Pulp Fiction is overrated.

kill bill (part 1) > Jackie Brown -> reservoir dogs > pulp fiction > kill bill (part 2)

he makes funny and enjoyable movies, most of them without a minute of boredom. but he doesn't deliver any senseful, sensible stuff with deepness and/or drama. so he will allways fail my subjective requirements for being "a great director".

Francis Ford Coppola is a much better director than Scorsese.
Sorry for opening the Scorsese can! :o

I just picked a director who has a) crtical standing (to a degree) and b) is a perfect example for a moviemaker directly influenced by other films.

He has lost his mojo after 1982 - The King of Comedy being his last really good movie.

(and now thé fans of Goodfellas and stuff may hook me off the stage)

My point was that taking the postmodern, eclectic road is not a criterion for quality.

Nobody proves that better than Steven Spielberg who is considered to be someone creating "original" or "fresh" images. Yet, alas! He is the most overrated director in movie history.

As for Tarantino: Reservoir Dogs already was a mixed bag of quotes (he even stole the color/name scheme from one of my 70ies favorites Pelham 1-2-3) But I deem Dogs as a true classic, superior to the highly entertaining Pulp Fiction

Jackie Brown was okay. The others are shite :2 cents:

{P.S. Coppola hasn't done anything watchable since Apocalypse Now :tongue:}

Spielberg wasn't considered a "serious filmmaker" in the same light as Scorsese. Spielberg was a commercial, popcorn muncher manufacturer. I do agree that he's completely overrated. Lucas is a better filmmaker, though, the latest Star Wars have seriously damaged Master Lucas.

Of the big budget, popcorn muncher directors...the best of them is Ridley Scott. I like a lot of his imagery.

If you want to get really technical, pretty much all of his movies are rip-offs of other movies by foreign directors. He tends to "borrow" pretty liberally, but I suppose people don't care that much as long as it's entertaining.

Like a lot of directors, including Scorsese, he's pretty honest about the influences that he's riffing off of. But what makes him a great director for me is the entertainment value. I can't think of a film of his that I haven't enjoyed watching repeatedly. Unlike a lot of directors, that tend to think of actors as meat puppets, he clearly loves actors and writes dialogue that gives them a chance to shine.

He also sets himself challenges in a lot of his films (killing off the characters that you cared about in the early part of Deathproof and then having to make you care about the new group half-way through, giving away the story at the beginning of Kill Bill and then having to make you want to watch two films to see how it plays out) that I find interesting. His use of music is great. His appreciation of low-budget films and actors is also great for those of us that saw the same films as he had, probably with not as much obsessive memory for detail, but definitely with a lot of enjoyment.

And isn't entertainment what it ought to all be about, as a bottom line? If seeing a film is a chore, then how good is the director?

Quentin Tarantino makes great movies... Just some people don't understand what he wants to do with his them .... I loved them alll.......................

Not a hardcore fan, but I'd say I've enjoyed every one of his movies with the exception of Death Proof. Just wasn't sure where he going with that film. Even so, the lapdance scene alone makes it worth a repeat viewing.

Resevoir Dogs and Deathproof for me. I saw the double with Planet Terror and Death Proof and enjoyed the latter immensely. Kurt Russell was awesome in that film. I think it is a very girl power. Particularly at the end when the girls kick the crap out of him. Resevoir Dogs also very good. It had an element of cool in it I really liked. Kill Bill films are enjoyable but arent my favourites.
