favorite drummer in ANY band...

Seriously?!? 3 pages into the thread, and nobody else has mentioned Steve Smith?!? The guy who Modern Drummer magazine named drummer of the year so many times in a row that they actually retired his name from the yearly running? The guy that can flawlessly change styles at the blink of an eye, and go from bebop, to metal, to salsa, to rock in consecutive tunes, and not sound at all out of the style? The guy whom most drummers name as one of their biggest influences? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?

wow. he IS tight. good call. good call...

Cuz the thread is FAVORITE drummer -- NOT best drummer!

Hey great for Portnoy and Smith et al being super awesome...how many gold/platinum records and top 10 singles do those drummers have?
Neil Peart has a few. Boring and basic Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts have more than a shit load.

Guess being 'the favorite' has more to it than just being 'the best'.

there is a fine line between being awesome and sticking out in someones mind as being a favorite. personally, i dont own all of dream theaters albums, but love portoys playing... yet i love the doors, but wouldnt consider john densmore to be one of my favorite drummers, and theyve had a bit of post mortem success as far as album sales... that being said, do you have any favorite drummers?

I'll say it again:

I think this might be turning into a "Whose the BEST Drummer" instead of a "FAVORITE Drummer" thingy.

My favorites would have to be Peart and Bonham.

Not only did they keep their band tight but their sound and musicality was/is an integral part of the songs.
Plus they are interesting and fun to listen to!

Could you imagine being a drummer like Charlie Watts?
Beating out that same god damn 4/4 for FIFTY YEARS?!?!

I could easily listen to a whole Doors album.
What I couldn't easily do is listen to ten 10-minute virtuosic drum solos by the same drummer.

The whole is greater than the piece (and being on freeones, don't take that the wrong way!).

Why yes. My favorite drummer was Richard Starkey!! :rofl2: ... Probably his best drumming was on "Helter Skelter," As he does say, the immortal words, "I got blisters on my fingers!!" :)

:jk:

Though I do like this off the Beatles' White Album:

Seriously, of the drummers I listed, Carmine Appice and Carl Palmer rank highly in my "favorite" book as do John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Neil Peart. ;)

Jordan Burns of Strung Out and Erin Tate of Minus The Bear. I like a drummer who puts the right fills in the right spots and keeps the whole band tight as fuck. All that virtuoso shit doesn't impress me. Unless you're Brann Dailor.

Brann Dailor is the absolute man
