favorite drummer in ANY band...

man, youve gotta love those local band shows... reps when i can for the awfulness

Except that dude is NOT awful!

He's The Mad Drummer (Steve Moore) -- fully endorsed by one Mike Portnoy!

Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Louis Hayes, Art Taylor, Egil Johansen, Jo Jones, Sonny Payne, Louie Bellson.....

Saw Max about 20 years ago...he put drummers half his age to shame!

Of course there are the legendary Gene Krupa - Buddy Guy battles:

p.s. -- I'm VERY surprised that no one has posted perhaps THE single most influential rock drummer -- Bonzo!

The Zep (and the Beastie Boys) would NEVER have been what they were if it weren't for that SOUND and style!

Elwood70

Torn & Frayed.
How is this motherfucker not on the first page? :

(I know it's three in a row -- but they only let me post 1 vid per!!)

Another GREAT drummer, and possibly forgotten, Ginger Baker.
He's kind of like the Jeff Beck of drums.

God, so many that I like have been mentioned already. For the sake of not having to look back and check off all those that have been listed, I'll just name the ones that first pop into my head.

Matt Cameron
Tony Allen
Ginger Baker
Topper Headon
Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson (I think the two have to be listed as a duo because of how they complemented each other)

I know I could list more if I wanted.

I think this might be turning into a "Whose the BEST Drummer" instead of a "FAVORITE Drummer" thingy.

My favorites would have to be Peart and Bonham.

Not only did they keep their band tight but their sound and musicality was/is an integral part of the songs.
Plus they are interesting and fun to listen to!

Could you imagine being a drummer like Charlie Watts?
Beating out that same god damn 4/4 for FIFTY YEARS?!?!

I know they are relatively unknown, but if you ever get a Chance to see Chicago band Maps & Atlases play, do it. Their drummer is fucking amazing. He does nothing standard, and he's brilliant.

My favorite for a long time, and one of the best IMHO is Eric Carr. God rest his kind heart and soul!

Other favorites of mine are:
Neil Peart: inventor and innovator!
John Bonham: he hits the drums so hard, it's like he's dropping furniture from the 10th floor!
Chad Smith: follows in the footsteps of Bonzo!
Eric Singer: another KISS drummer. I only like his drumming from the no-makeup era. Now he sounds too much like Peter Criss. The albums he did with Alice Cooper are also killer!
Ian Paice: really nice phrasing and always spot-on!

Mikey Dee
Nicko McBrain

Charlie Benante

Agreed. I've always been a fan of Bonzo. Nicko McBrain is also a favorite.

Seriously?!? 3 pages into the thread, and nobody else has mentioned Steve Smith?!? The guy who Modern Drummer magazine named drummer of the year so many times in a row that they actually retired his name from the yearly running? The guy that can flawlessly change styles at the blink of an eye, and go from bebop, to metal, to salsa, to rock in consecutive tunes, and not sound at all out of the style? The guy whom most drummers name as one of their biggest influences? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!?

Anyone ever heard of Future Man? I saw him a few years ago with Bela Fleck and The Flecktones. He built something called a "drummitar", which he would play with one hand while the other and his feet were playing an actual drum kit. It was pretty awesome to behold. Bass enthusiasts might now his legendary brother, Victor Wooten.
