Pardon my ignorance in US Presidential Election but, exactly when is the US President elected officially?

Don't worry about it. A US president is elected when he has accumulated 270 electoral votes from all of the states. Now some states have more electoral votes than others such as California, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. While other states only represent 3-4-5 electoral votes.

Oooo holy shit! McCain almost equaled in Texas. This election won't be that a piece of cake for Obama.

Nope, its a whole lot closer than I thought it would have been. Sadly I feel that the only reason Obama hasn't gotten more votes is because of his race. There are a few people in this country who will simply not grow up and look past skin color.

There are 538 electoral votes total cast in 50 states and Washington D.C. Population determines the number of votes. The total of all the states added together of which 270 is the majority for a win.

What happens and with criticism of the system is that reps in each state are to vote for the candidate popular among the constituents casting votes. The popular vote should decide which way the reps vote and the majority reps determine which way the entire state goes as a unanimous group.

That's why someone can win on the popular vote but lose on the total number of electoral votes below 270. The numbers don't add up the same in both ways of figuring all the time. There may be many excess popular votes in a state with many electoral votes that don't carry over into a small state that perhaps loses by a small difference in popular votes.

The procedure has not been without it's critics and is probably archaic in nature and prone to error.

This looks like a sweep. CA is traditionally Dem adding 55 and Florida's count is already showing Obama in the lead adding 27 for a total Obama 255 out of 270.

ABC news is holding back on Florida, traditionally republican but showing an Obama lead of 52% with 49% reporting.
