Einstein Saw Religion as a "Childish Superstition"

Pretty interesting article which gets into the nuances of Einstein's thoughts:

Excerpt:

This is what Albert Einstein wrote in his letter to philosopher Eric Gutkind, in response to his receiving the book "Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt". The letter was written on January 3, 1954, in German, and explains Einstein's personal beliefs regarding religion and the Jewish people; it was put on sale one year later and remained into a personal collection ever since. Now the letter is again on auction in London and has a starting price of 8,000 sterling pounds.

The letter states pretty clearly that Einstein was by no means a religious person - in fact, the great physicist saw religion as no more than a "childish superstition". "The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this", Einstein wrote.

Einstein was Jewish, which is why the people of Israel asked him once to become Israel's second president. Also, Einstein felt uncomfortable with the idea that the Jews are God's favored People.

"For me the Jewish religion like all others is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions. And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise, I cannot see anything 'chosen' about them", said Einstein.

So you mean when he was conceiving his special relativity theory he didnt stop mid way through and ask "What would Jesus do?" I'm shocked :1orglaugh.

Absolutely true. Religion is also a kind of drug for governments to control and keep the community under pressure.

Religion is so old fashion.

No wonder he said that, cuz good brains are not compatible with religion. Einstein definitely had good brains!

I don't know about that. Maybe he was critical of religion (religion and spiritual belief aren't neccesarily the same thing.) but I don't think that you can say he was a "devout" atheist. considering that he also has many qoutes which seem to favor his belief in a higher "power" beyond what human's presently understand.

He was so pissed off at his rabbi that he invented atomic power.

he also did not believe in Heisenberg's uncertainty principle or that randomness was built into the universe. of course he has since been proven dead wrong. Einstein wasn't perfect or all knowing. And his opinion is just that - his opinion. Einstein was not an expert on plants or art or anthropology or biology or or psychology or religion. who cares what he has to say about plants or art or anthropology or biology or psychology or religion? there is no evidence that he ever studied the Bible or other ancient texts, so what's the big deal here?

Agreed. A jew is usually self loathing. He believes but he hates at the same time. Hates the situation and tries to change it. A'course.. when you try to change the world, you usually get your wish. He built a bomb and killed a fuckload of people. We still have consciences, and can still ask forgiveness for our idiot human ways even if we hate our G_d.

I'm the same way. That fucker in the sky has a pisspoor sense of humor.

Einstein was right :)

Damn right!

Religion is just mind control. It's a way to keep people in line and have them think the way they want you to. I, on the other hand, have this real moron thing I do, it's called THINKING. I don't need some book or some religious figure with a $500 dollar hat, sitting on a throne in Rome telling me I can do this, I can't do that. Also, who and where are the author(s) of said book? Where is the higher power that religion is based on? If I can't see something or don't know who wrote it or there's no proof, I don't know, it kinda loses its credibility.

He also said that “A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity” ... :D

The babble was written 70 years after the fact. Why is god so mysterious? Miracles were performed, supposedly, yet modern man hasn't witnessed any. There are plenty of sites that question whether jesus ever existed.
I believe religion does more harm than good, and show me proof of god without relying on the catch all "have fuckin faith!"
