Here you are. Some pre-generated characters in full colour, ready for printing, with exclusive artwork. Made for the D&D Encounters sessions, they'll add that extra ompff to new players at your table until they decide in which race and class they want to play their own character.

i picked up a little sample grab bag from i guess what was left from a d&d encounters or whatever session at a comic store and one of those pre-gen character sheets were in it. as was a poster, some fortune cards, and some other stuff.

Has anybody ever played with those pre-made pog or cardboard cutout pieces with pictures of monsters already printed on them? I'm wondering if I should shell out some for a package they sell now that contains most of the monsters in the main monster book. I don't know how well made they are though. Although, I would like to think it would be hard to screw up printed pieces of thick cardstock. It would beat having a chunk of board the right size with the monsters name just written on it or a coin representing something on the mat. There just isn't any way I can afford miniatures.

It would also beat the old days where I would print up pictures I scanned or got online, cut them out, and past them on poster-board with a glue stick. Not to mention that printing things isn't cheap and I haven't had a printer for my computer in years.

the monster tokens? yeah man, look what i just ordered.

http://newbiedm.com/2010/11/16/newb...ter-vault-dms-kit-and-the-city-dungeon-tiles/

i already had some, came with a few in the red box. sturdy, thick, water resistant i think. i love minis but cant afford those thing either.

i only have 4 real minis, and now im anxiously waiting on my tokens. ill get em monday.

i already have the book that comes in the set and the book is just a monster manual in small size. love it. picked it up at a used book store last week. im just gonna ebay the book and use the new one when it comes.

btw, you can find the scans online easily if you feel so inclined. i was going to do that and take em to the ups store or something but i got a good deal on the monster vault. found it for about 10 bucks plus shipping.

Yeah I recommend what Squallumz has got. I have also got it. Its the Monster Vault and packed full of monster tokens. They are 1" tokens, with pictures on one side and a bloodied counter if you flip them over. These wizards of the coast ones are well made, I brought mine on ebay second hand (but in a new condition from someone who picked it up and never played them) for around $20.

Otherwise you can make your own, you can get a 1" hole punch from martha stewart store ( or anything simular from elsewhere ) get some card stock and print out some images on glossy photo paper and get some double back tape. Probably a little cheaper than the monster vault and you can make what monsters you wish if you use a graphics programme like paint.net

Also like squallumz said the monster vault comes with a book which is essential a monster manual for 4ed.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Pathfinder ones. They now sell cardboard pogs that are sized right of pretty much every monster in their first bestiary and some of the more common monsters come in multiple ones. I don't like 4th edition, but as long as the pictures are good it wouldn't matter. (Although I do like Paizo artwork better, at least most of the secondary artist that do things like most monster pictures among other things, as I'm seem to be one of the few Pathfinder fans that find Reynold's artwork overrated and often too comic bookish.) On the other hand I like the look of some of the classic monsters that Wizards does better like the the troll, goblin, and ogre. Maybe it was because I was used to their version for so many years. I also can't get tokens of things like Beholders or Mindflayers anywhere else. The fact that one side has a bloodied counter doesn't help me though and might be a hindrance if I need to use that side for something else.

Yeah I know you use pathfinder and guessed that the bloodied thing wouldnt help you . Id recommend some link if i find them, because there are variations companies that produce these tokens but seriously just make your own, if you play pathfinder you are really going to want to have pogs that are specific to certain characters, situations and environments, so its best just make your own.

Looking at that Drizzt picture makes me think they finally need to nail down what a scimitar looks like. I like the old small falchion look a lot better than the ones where they make them seem like large fillet knives. :1orglaugh

Although now that I think about it another thing that bothers me is that his scimitars are both distinct and different yet pretty much every artist that has drawn him has shown them as identical. At least they make art for him that is palatable now. In the past despite being one of the most popular fictional characters in the history of fantasy stuff his artwork was downright HORRIBLE, really really horrible. If you have ever looked at the original covers of any of his old books (with the possible exception of the original Crystal Shard one which wasn't that bad) you would know what I mean.

well if you can identify the artist of the picture i posted i would be grateful. It was taken off from myspace and i uploaded it on an adult image hosting site. Please let me know if you find out.

They need to hurry up and invent those teleportation machines I've seen in Star Trek so it's easier to get groups of people together that want to play. :1orglaugh

Of course getting a better connection so I could play online would at least help mitigate that.

From what I have heard so far of previews they been given out for a couple of months now I'm already not to thrilled with the way the skill system is going to work in 5th Edition. There just doesn't seem like there will be a wide variance between somebody that's supposedly an expert and somebody that's not but still has a decent ability score tied to it. It also seems like they are making it so anybody with a decent attribute in an associated ability score can do it well in that skill. I don't want to play somebody that supposedly one of the best rogues in the nation yet only has a 40% chance of doing something better than a slightly dexterous low level commoner in a major rogue like skill.

I also hope they don't throw the baby out with the bath-water in the thought process of, "Oh no spellcasters are so overpowered in 3rd edition we need to nerf the hell out them" line of thinking some people have instead of doing minor tweaks that are needed.

I see what you are saying and I do agree with you. Saving throws are broken in 4ed, the fact that everyone has the same chance of saving (a roll of a 10 or more) just feels wrong. That said this is why you have leaders in the party so with a decent optimised character you should remedy this cure (if they remember). And those two things (remembering and relying on one character for saving throws) are why I think saving throws are essentially broken.

I'd sort of have to agree with you about skills too. Saying this. these rules accommodate fast & easy (and fun) play if you are playing Encounters and such. Which I played the other night. And if you play at home, then speak with your DM and see if you can fathom some home rules (although this goes against the grain of playing the game I would prefer the rules to be solid to start with)

Since you mentioned fast and easy play, that's another things I'm sort of getting worried about. From statements the developers have made it seem like they want a average game session to be able to fit into an hour. While I don't like sessions that needlessly grind along when they don't have to or battles that take five hours to clear one room, designing the rules so a session can get in in with that amount of speed just doesn't seem very roleplay like to me.
