The original ones were Italian grocery stores. Once the brand grew to multiple locations in the tri-state area, they moved into fast-food pizza and adopted the model that we all know and love. I don't think any of the original Sbarro locations have been open for over ten years and many of the ones opened since 1970 have shuttered as part of their restructuring after bankruptcy. The company is mostly active in the mid-west and has closed many of it's East Coast locations.
