but they believe there is a Pete
There's
no such thing as "Pete". It's a meaningless, random name that is used in a common expression. Nobody "believes" in Pete...they just use the expression.
What about when someone says, "he's got the life of Riley"...??? Just because they use the name "Riley", does that mean they have some deep rooted belief in Riley? No. It's just part of a common expression that people use.
I dont think your thinking about how were are influenced during childhood, when were all young were told a wonderful story about (to quote George Carlin) an invisible man in the sky,who watches everything we do and if were good and believe in him were going to a magical place until the e9nd of time but if we dont were going to go to a place with fire etc etc etc you see how its designed to control you), what we are taught when we are young has a huge effect on us as adults. So phrases "God Damnit" or "Jesus Christ!!!" are not underhanded remarks that actually mean the person believes its just a phrase that has been said within society for a long long time.
I agree with that. When we're growing up, we adapt to our surroundings and mimic those who are close to us (AKA - our parents). In respect to phrases that we use, we get most of those from our parents. For example, my dad uses the expression "six or one half dozen or the other" quite often. I have rarely heard anyone else use that expression, but since my dad says it a lot, I say it a lot too. The same goes for expressions like "God damnit", etc.
We dont curse Zues, Buddah, Allah because we have not been brought up with those "Gods" if we had been then who knows, but as I and you have not been told the magical story of Allah as a child and we have not heard people around us say things similar to that.
That's a :lame: excuse. All kinds of other "gods" are represented in America.
Buddha, Allah, Krishna, Shiva, you name the "god" and they have followers in this country. So, that's not an excuse.
WEW, name
one person who
currently worships Zeus...
You can't. Why? Because BlueBalls is right. Now-a-days,
nobody is brought up to worship some ancient religion that,
for lack of a better description, has been "dead" for quite some time. This is why people don't say "Zeus damnit" or "thank Zeus". Instead, they say "God damnit" and "thank God".
