Do public schools teach anything about computers?

Sadly the overwhelming majority of people know how to use a computer, but know nothing about them; however in the late 70's through the 80's people who had computers usually knew a fair amount about them. On the surface technology is now so simple anyone can use it without knowing anything about it. I suppose the same thing happened with the automobile if you owned one in the 1920's you knew a lot about it, now there are people who can't change a tire, or the oil.

It has always amazed me that the more technologically advanced our society becomes, the less the majority of the people know.

Up until around the time Win 2000 came out, it was just as cost effective to build your own PC as it was to buy one. Now it's cheaper to buy a new pc or laptop than it is to upgrade. It's really now just an appliance. One of the things I hate about Win 8 is that it is so "dummied down" to where it is not as intuitive to go to your last document or system tools to change things.
You car analogy is pretty good. With cars it's a little different because the older cars I had I could place the jack under either bumper and lift to change the tires. Now there are specific points lift each tire. With desktops, you can swap a entire board instead one part on the board.

It is still a touch cheaper to build a high-end gaming system than to buy a pre-built, not by much though, and I mean high end! Did you hear the new Windows was announced today, the successor to Windows 8 is Windows 10. WTF!

I'm almost afraid to see what 10 is going to be. It may become self aware.
