A Cricketing thread???

In a week when we've been mourning the untimely losses of great sportsmen, I'd like to post one bit of good news:

Re: A Cricketing thread???

An absolute legend, the most exciting and naturally gifted player of his generation, long may he carry on, still the most dangerous player on the planet when he gets going.

Would you put his achievments above that of Tendulkar.

Think there very very close.

Lara maybe the more gifted and devasting, Tendulkar the more consistent.

Flamboyant Australian media magnate Kerry Packer, the country's richest man, has died at the age of 68.

So strange - I remember in the 1970s how Kerry Packer was villified by the Cricketing establishment for creating a rival series.
Now he's acknowledged for saving Cricket - I hope that's a fitting epitaph for him.

RIP.

Everyone here in Australia knows what he did for Cricket... but, that was just one of his great accomplishments!!!

Re: A Cricketing thread???

Apologies for the lengthy bump. but.....

Test Match Series: India v England
01-03-2006 at Nagpur, Day 4 of 5
Close

England won the toss and decided to bat

England 1st Innings
393 all out (127.5 overs)

India 1st Innings
323 all out (136.5 overs)

England 2nd Innings
297 for 3 (87.0 overs)

After all the trouble the English team encountered off-field, I think they done quite a nice job........so far.

Why consider run as a quotient for judging the cricketer? Each has his own style. Would you consider Victor Trumper a non-player because he didn't score much?

And they deserve to win, after being called underdog.

Third Test, Mumbai, day five:
England 400 & 191 beat India 279 & 100 by 212 runs

Congratulations to England for winning the final test in Mumbai (Bombay in old currency) and thus earning a 1-1 draw with India.
Considering the injury list England had, squaring the test series was an outstanding effort.

England beat India to tie series (details)

Re: A Cricketing thread???

Freddie Flintoff shows once more that he is by a long distance the most valuable player in the cricketing world.

Re: A Cricketing thread???

Also how on earth are India still rated above Pakistan?

For me the top 3 goes

1. Australia
2= England
2= Pakistan

This summers series between Pakistan and England will decide which team is seriously gonna challenge Australia.

Shame about the Windies but they've been going downhill for years. Shame as the likes of Sarwan, Chanderpaul, Bravo, Ramdin, Gayle (when his brain is in gear), Lara, Collymore and the hugely talented Fidel Edwards are class acts.

Re: A Cricketing thread???

It gets better for England:

England's cricketers found themselves with a double cause for celebration on Wednesday as they were confirmed as qualifiers for the second stage of October's ICC Champions Trophy in India.

Only sides in the top six of the LG ICC ODI Championship table on 1 April automatically reach that stage and England will now be at least sixth on that date thanks to Sri Lanka's four-wicket loss to Pakistan in Colombo.

Team Matches Points Rating

Australia 46 6064 132
South Africa 40 4776 119
Pakistan 41 4666 114
New Zealand 37 4180 113
India 45 5075 113
England 27 2920 108

Sri Lanka 48 5026 105
West Indies 27 2398 89
Zimbabwe 27 1122 42
Bangladesh 28 600 21
Kenya 7 123 18

Re: A Cricketing thread???

I think tendulkar is the best one player of all time and the records set by him are really hard to break but now he is getting old and i think he will sonn retire or maybe forced to retire. As far as test is concerned lara is at the top and tendulkar is close to him but not his match.Congrats to England on beating india in last test but be ready for Pakistan it would be a series to watch.

Re: A Cricketing thread???

I guess this is the thread to celebrate Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene for their world record Test partnership - hitting an unbeaten 578 between them.

Sri Lanka 592-2 v South Africa 169

BEST TEST STANDS
  • S'kkara & J'wardene: 578*, SL v SA, '06
  • Jayasuriya & Mahanama: 576, SL v Ind, '97-'98
  • Jones & Crowe: 451, NZ v SL, Wellington, '90-'91
  • W Ponsford & D Bradman: 451, Aus v Eng, The Oval, '34
  • M Nazar & J Miandad: 451, Pak v Ind, Hyderabad, '82-'83
*Unbeaten and still batting

Yeah saw that on Sky Sports news earlier Om3ga. Now I have no interest in cricket and I won't bore anybody with my opinions on it. But when I saw this I did think that this was some feat, the time they must have been out there and to stay sharpe enough. Speaking from a person point of view as a ex-forth batsman it's tough to keep you mind on the job. (I did say I hate the game, not never played it and was told to be a very good batsman, but had no interest, prefered football and other more active sports.)

Apparently both batsmen have batted for over 10 hours....
Haven't played the game since school (and that's more years than I care to mention), but still keep an interest here and there...
