Could America take to cricket?

I don't see it happening

Perhaps it's too long and drawn out in its normal form for this day and age.People in the UK may be surprised to find that until way after WW2 Cricket was by far the most popular sport and twice as many people paid to watch a Cricket match as a football one.The reinvention of limited overs , in particular 20/20, has brought some of the crowds back and spectators can see a whole match in an afternoon.
The early settlers took Cricket and baseball with them to the Americas, until 1900 they were neck and neck in popularity so there is some history there. The BBC article neglects to mention that baseball is also an English game.
There's a lot of similarity between the games though Cricket has an extra dimension.A batter (batsman) stays until he's out rather than for a maximum of 4 scoring shots. There's more to watch and 20/20 Cricket has much more action.

That doesnt sound right

I think in America, if you like baseball, there is a chance that You Might like Cricket. Although considering how established baseball is and how (kind of) similar they are anyway Cricket wouldnt be much more than a minor sport at best.
On the other hand, if you dont like baseball, you probably wont like Cricket. Might be a chance with 20/20, but not much else.
Overall, not much chance of it happening.

Maybe as a touring sport with a whole lot of coverage. I don't see Americans brought up to play catch with a baseball in the back yard, or equating baseball and basketball with All American, suddenly taking up cricket.

I'm just finally learning football. Please don't make me learn another sport!

Cricket would be perfect for America.. they can all sit around on their fat-arses eating burgers n hotdogs and having a good snooze.

tunsty :nono:

America barely took to soccer.

What America needs.....more bowling. :hatsoff:

We don't know shit about baseball. There's no way we could comprehend Cricket. Curling is more popular....

Tbh, I've given Cricket a looksee on the tele.... :sleep:

I think we could kick the old Empire's asses in Darts and Snooker

I'm English and I'm not particularly keen on cricket either. I'll admit it has some style and complexity - it's certainly not as mind-numbingly boring and pointless as golf or snooker.

I suppose the only 'sport' that really gets me going is lady's football (girl's sarker to my American friends!). Probably because of this picture spread I saw in a jazz-mag a few years back about this amateur ladies team from somewhere around Coventry (or was it Nottingham!) - they certainly got a lot dirtier in the showers than they had on the pitch - if you see what I mean.
:sex:
It gave me a whole new perspective on the game. I remember having a long slow stroke while watching last year's Ladies Cup Final between Arsenal and (I think) Sunderland.
Couldn't tell you what the final score was, but I know I shot my load just as Arsenal scored a goal.

I get more excited picking out socks. Maybe if I needed a week long nap.:sleep::sleep:

As an American, I have absolutely no idea what's going on no matter how much cricket I watch. I could pick up on Aussie-rules football relatively easy, and I actually found it super-entertaining. I'm surprised Americans don't dig it, but we apparently only like games with minimal action anyway.

Cricket is nowhere near a sport for the Americans. No offence, but Americans don't strike me as patient enough to sit and watch a single match that lasts for 5 days.

Don't get me wrong, they have the patience for 4-5 hours for a Football game (although we call it rugby without pads in UK) - surely trade descriptions applies to that sport; they hardly touch the ball with their feet  - but for 5 full days of watching a guy chuck a Cricket ball at three sticks is hardly rivetting enough to keep the attention of most of us British, let alone a society built on in-yer-face, hard, fast, action, now, when?....,
....now!

I like Americans; they gave us Scrubs, NCIS and most of the films in my DVD collection. They give us a laugh when they play Soccer (not because they're bad, but because we do not expect them the be any good, when in fact they actually are), they gave us NHL and Bill Hicks. So in my book, they are brill, but I don't see them taking on Cricket in any form...and as I know little about sport, this means they'll be kicking our asses at Cricket in no time
