Claudy Bombings: Church And Govt Criticised

These "terrorist" attacks have been mentioned once in a post but I'm really surprised this doesn't have a thread already.

The Catholic Church, police in Northern Ireland
and the British Government have been criticised
over the 1972 Claudy bombings that killed nine
people.

The nine-year investigation into the triple bombings
found evidence of collusion between the groups to
protect Father James Chesney.

The Irish priest was a key suspect in the attacks
but was allowed to move to a new parish and was never
questioned by police. He died in 1980.

More details can be found here.

This is a disgrace. Heads should roll but probably won't. I can't help but
wonder what would have happened if a muslim was the main suspect in
an identical act of terrorism. I'm sure the police and the government
wouldn't have let him get away with it. :2 cents:

It's surprising that the British government colluded with the Irish Catholic Church and I can only think that they didn't want to inflame the situation and bring the church into it. Maybe they didn't want to damage relations with the US which has a strong Irish Catholic community and influence and has provided the IRA with moral support and has never even officially recognised them as a terrorist group despite them waging war on Britain for decades, wish the 'special relationship' was really two way.

Uh huh. The IRA had no idea what a mountain they had to climb.

Think they got what they wanted, British troops out of Northern Ireland and a role in government, think they always knew a united Ireland was unattainable what with the large Protestant community that resides in the North.

I think the only way for these folks to move on is by eradicating
everything pro IRA & UDA and the Orange and Hibee marches. But I
don't think that will ever happen,so the next generations will be
brainwashed with the same old bullshit.

In Scotland, the police are putting up the protection costs for marches so
the only ones you see are in Glasgow or once a year in another town.I
think maybe this is what should happen over in Ulster as well,if they are
serious in getting rid of this sickness once and for all. :)
