Classic rock blows. Do you agree?

I can't stand 99% of "classic" rock. It's overplayed, over-rated, and just plain awful. There are a few bands I don't hate, like Queen and Bob Dylan, but almost everyone else just annoys the crap out of me.

Which bands annoy you most?
Queen and Bob Dylan are very different from each other. I happen to love both, not many people do.
Of course to a geezer like me, we may have different opinions on what is "classic rock"
Beatles and Stones certainly are definitely classic rock.

That stuff was from my youth when I was cool, lol, so I have a love for it

apparently, metallica is classic rock now. by that argument, it does sorta suck.

the problem with classic rock is... the radio. yeah, you're gonna hear the same songs over and over again because thats what they do.

since i stopped listening to the radio, music is a lot more special. the radio really kills some great songs by playing them over and over and over again. but, what are they gonna do? play that fucking rush song once a week or even once a day?

you wish.

Such an ironic generational thing. When I listen to "modern" rock, I think most of it is over-produced, shallow and unidentifiable in that I can't tell bands apart. My favorite era of music was late 80s to early 90s. The better "classic" rock bands that survived into the MTV generation were rocking and bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, STP, and Alice in Chains were emerging. If I remember my radio lingo right, any album more than 15 years old is a "classic" so those bands are all now classic rockers.

AOR sucks sweaty ass, but I'm indifferent to most of the rest. I'm more of an alt-rock and post-punk man but I do love me some Jethro Tull (though I guess that's more folk).

Absolutely not. In fact, because of classic rock, the bands of today, and every rap artist that exists, has a place to steal ideas and content. If it's modern, it's been done, originality is a thing of the past, and there are VERY few musicians out there now, that can even come close to the skill and talent of days gone past. Half of them use sequencers, and effects, to achieve what the classic rockers did with a fucking Hammond B3 and some Leslie's, or a Les Paul and a Marshall stack.

Isn't that a coincidence. There is 99% of "modern" music I can't stand.

Before my time but I was listening to the Rolling Stones collection on rdio and was just thinking how alot of their songs would be viable hits if they were to come out today. There's not a generational thing when it comes to the Stones. Gimme Shelter - that song is f'n bad ass.

 That was my instant reaction as well.

I do think most "classic rock" stations have ridiculously narrow playlists. I mean, Lynyrd Skynyrd was all about a helluva lot more than just "Freebird" and "Gimme Three Steps" but it seems like that's about all you ever hear. Where's "Mississippi Kid" and "Ballad of Curtis Lowe"? You never hear them. So, for that reason, I usually avoid "classic rock" stations.

Listen to Neal Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere", serious rock n roll; Scorpions, Humble Pie (30 Days in the Hole);all early Led Zepplin, Red Hot Chili Peppers; most all of the Doors library is serious rock; does Van Halen rank as Classic Rock? So many examples of screaming rock n roll from a long time ago...

I love All Southern Rock from the Outlaws to Skynrd...where does ZZ Top fit in? Classic or not, that's rock. I mean ("...Driving While Blind, Jesus Just Left Chicago) got me from Houston to Puebla in record time, pedal to the metal, just a bit hoarse but who cares? Nothing some JD couldn't fix. :)
Lot's of great rock n roll never got big time but still lives out there.

The classic rock radio format doesn't truly represent the genre. How often do you hear Steely Dan or UFO, just to name two great bands, on the radio? I have no clue because I quit listening to the joke of a classic rock station here where I live years ago, but when I did listen, it was the same old tired overplayed shit on a loop. I can understand why anyone whose only exposure to that genre is radio play might have a less than stellar opinion. Hell, if I judged contemporary music solely by the shit on the radio I wouldn't have much of an opinion. It's four months into the year and I have yet to listen to single song on the radio all the way through.

I fnd this true with all "classic" genre radio stations. It happens in R & B as well. For Parliament-Funkadelic, the only song that is played is Flashlight. No Maggot Brain? It seems these stations are more Retro Top 40 of their genre of music than actual classic Rock or R & B stations.

The one thing I will add is most of the groups of that era have a diverse type of songs through their albums let alone their careers. As examples the Guess Who, American Woman and These Eyes. Or The Eagles Life In The Fast Lane, I Can't Tell You Why, Heartache Tonight. Name a group today that's playlist is that diverse.

The biggest thing about why it sucks is because if you listen to it on the radio, you will hear the same batch of songs every day. There's a good 50+ years of music to draw from, and for some reason they seem to play the same songs over and over again. You can guarantee that if the DJ says that Hendrix is coming up in the next set,They are more than likely going to play Watchtower.I don't think I've ever heard Stone Free played on the radio ever, and I'm positive that I've never heard Spanish Castle Magic.

That's just an example of how the radio never really goes into more than a few songs per album, other than the Beatles.

Basically what i've been taught is "classic", aside from the two artists i mentioned, is Lynyrd Skynyrd(garbage), ZZ Top(no), the Rolling Stones who i actually don't particularly mind, ACDC, who I actually think made some of the worst music of all time, etc. Anything in that area is awful.
