City Considers Tax Wage

I used to work in a city that taxed earning made while working inside of it so it's nothing new.

Also despite all the bluster and complaining I never knew anybody that even came close to contemplating moving out because of it. It was usually something that was threatened by people that talked a lot better than actually did something. The truth is that unless it's a ridiculously large percentage people aren't going to get upset enough about it to move out.

There's been a working tax in my town for many, many years. BTW, the city council and mayor's office has consisted only of Republicans for more than 30 years.

I think the U.S. should repeal the 16th Amendment and do away with all forms of income tax. It is unconstitutional, which is why an amendment had to be made in order to do it. As a democratic society, you should be able to keep all the income you earn and not have to pay a portion of it to the government. Tax other things, just not income.

here's a crazy idea. If you want to eliminate debt, stop spending money. I know when my funds are getting low, I need to cut back on some of my "fun money" spending. I don't consider my self Republican or Democratic. I just like to use my own common sense. Why should the government make me pay them more of my hard earned money because they spent all the existing funds recklessly?

should we have taxes, yes, absolutely. But those funds should be used for things that are NEEDED. Cut out the frivolous spending and watch that debt disappear. No need to add more taxes.

This idea is kind of crappy sure it'll get them out of debt a little but the whole United States is in debt so either way you will be shooting youself in the foot beause people will not want to live in Harrisburg for the time being if they have to be overly-taxed and then they will still lose money due to people not being there.

Boy, if this goes through, next thing you know they'll be taxing tourists. It never ceases to amaze me how some people's minds work when they're considering how to get out of debt.

I've went to New York and Washington last May and I had to pay Tourist taxes!

In Belgium there was a plan for taxing trucks, because they cause traffic jams. But the Belgians were also charged, so there was much protest and the plan removed. But the traffic congestion remains.

Within five years I predict a tax tax. If you're lucky enough to be making money and, therefor, paying taxes, you should have to pay for it. So there should be a 15% tax on whatever taxes you're lucky enough to be paying.

I'm not defending the income tax, but how could the 16th Amendment be "unconstitutional" seeing as it was added to our Constitution in the exact manner the framers intended?

You could say that the abolition of slavery and the woman's right to vote is unconstitutional under that logic.

In every country nobody wants to pay any taxes. But everybody is asking for more services from all sides. So I think it's the permanent antilogy of people wanting much for free and being surprised there comes up a bill at a time :D
And I pay 42% direct tax here in Germany :p

It's a joke, in San Jose up North from here, over the last two years the city has built about 15 new upgrade replacement firehouses as well as bought all kinds of new apparatus from the finest manufacturers, while just two months ago the dept. let go of 50 full time fire personnel! :dunno: Talk about a bitch slap, I really feel for these men and women almost to the point I wouldn't mind paying a temporary tax to save their jobs, it wasn't their fault that the purchasing dept. for the city decided to go for broke in two short years! Jeesh! I mean, what a bunch of imbeciles! . . . or maybe not, perhaps the individual or individuals who went crazy with the city checkbook actually knew exactly what they were doing in a back room dealing or some such, it's just too bad that so many lives had to be affected in such a negative fashion, particularly when the layoff could have been prevented in the first place.

Take your pick, it's either incompetence or somebody lacking in the dept of integrity as the reason why many municipalities are in a bind.

*Wiki ''City of Bell, California'' for example.

i doubt it.

a gov that takes 42% of your money before you even see it.

just don't seem right.

"wage tax" come to Denmark and ill show you taxes! we pay between 41% and 60% of our in income taxes. however health, education etc. is 100% free.

The city is undoubtedly in a bind and in need of funding, then again who isn't these days...

All that has been said is that it is a possibility, therefore alarm isn't warranted. It is confusing that some "officials" reported that it is being considered, while a "representative" is saying it is a long way off; they need to synchronize their voices and report it without confusion.

America was founded on freedom from taxation, as such it would only be fair to fully examine all other options before imposing a new tax. Perhaps costs could be cut by streamlining the bureaucracy and eliminating non-essential positions.

If this proposition is still considered "a long wat off" then I don't think the city residents should have anything to worry about until it actually becomes a likely situation. I also don't think that many residents would really leave the city in protest. They're just saying they will because they hope that it doesn't come down to them having to pay this tax. Besides, threatning to leave isn't going to solve there problems or the cities.
