there are a lot of things wrong with china, but they have done a lot of smart things too, and this is one of the best. I've said it before and I'll say it again, anyone who had kids does it for selfish reasons. If 50% of the worlds population was wiped out tommorrow it could only have a positive impact. Just look at the impact of the plague on europe's economy. Or to use a better modern example of the scenario, look at Rwanda. An important lesson about what can happen when you have environmental damage tied into severe population density. Notice that you never heard anything after the genocide? the society really stablized a lot.
obviously i'm not saying that is a desirable thing to happen, but that it will be a neccesary thing for all of us someday. there is no humane way to deal with overpopulation, except to stop the problem at the root and voluntarily make the choice not to have kids that the world cannot support. As i've said before once again, just because you have the luxury of food in your childs mouth, don't forget it's only because a disporportionatly large number of other people's are going without.
